    Warm professional staff clean facility

I was very pleased with my loved one's stay - the staff (Savannah, Megan, Teresa, Allison, Cristina and the nurses) were warm, knowledgeable and professional, and the facility was clean and well-kept. Rehab, discharge planning, transportation and billing were handled smoothly and administration answered questions promptly. I felt my family member was safe, well cared for, and I would recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Southwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is strongly positive. Reviewers repeatedly emphasize the professionalism, compassion, and competence of staff at all levels — nursing, rehabilitation, admissions, administration, and social work. Many reviewers explicitly state they would return or recommend the facility, describing it as a warm, welcoming, and family-like environment. Multiple reviews highlight successful rehabilitation outcomes and give specific praise to physical therapy and rehab staff, indicating the facility is effective for post-surgical recovery and short-term rehabilitation stays.

Staff quality is the dominant theme. Reviewers frequently use words such as helpful, respectful, kind, considerate, and caring. Several staff members and administrators are named (for example Teresa, Megan, Savannah/Savanah Lee, Cristina, Allison), and these individuals are credited with going above and beyond, providing transition assistance, answering questions eagerly, and making families feel involved and informed. Administrative processes — admissions, billing, and insurance handling — are noted as straightforward and handled well. Families also appreciate clear care planning and notification practices, including communication about medication changes.

Care and safety receive consistent praise. Reviews mention excellent nursing care, a sense of safety for residents, and a staff that demonstrates urgency about health and wellness concerns. The social work support and the involvement of staff in sitting with and interacting with residents contribute to emotional well-being and peace of mind for families. Several reviewers specifically mention that loved ones adjusted well to the facility, were well taken care of, and that the environment provided reassurance during recovery or longer stays.

Facility standards are also highlighted: reviewers describe Southwood as clean, well-kept, neat, and community-focused. Dining is noted positively through comments about meal variety. The atmosphere is described as warm and family-like, with staff retention and training mentioned as strengths that help maintain consistent, quality care. The facility is repeatedly described as an excellent temporary home and a supportive place during transition periods such as post-operative recovery.

The main concerns that appear across the reviews are limited but consistent: a few reviewers reported delayed administration of pain medication and noted that staff appeared stretched thin during certain times. One review explicitly mentions a family member’s pain being undertreated due to staffing constraints. Other comments such as “mostly timely care” imply that while responsiveness is generally good, there are occasional lapses in immediacy. These issues suggest that peak staffing pressures can affect timely medication delivery or rapid response in some situations.

In sum, the compiled reviews paint Southwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center as a high-quality, well-managed facility with strong clinical and rehabilitative capabilities, compassionate and engaged staff, and effective administrative support. The most frequent recommendations are related to the caring nature of the staff, successful rehab results, and the clean, reassuring environment. Prospective residents and families should be aware of occasional staffing-related delays (notably around pain medication) but can otherwise expect attentive care, clear communication, and a supportive transition and recovery experience.

About Southwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

Southwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, sometimes called Southwood Nursing and Retirement Center, sits among other skilled nursing facilities with its 100-bed center, and if you walk around inside you'll see spacious private and semi-private suites, with select rooms offering flat-screen TVs, cable, and in-room refrigerators, and folks keep busy with indoor and outdoor gathering spaces plus a dedicated rehabilitation unit that's set up for short-term rehab and outpatient therapy. The staff, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants, provide round-the-clock care, so somebody's always nearby, and you'll find wound care with a wound physician, therapies for pain and movement like diathermy and electrical stimulation, and even geriatric psychiatry services and podiatry, plus help with incontinence and fall prevention. Residents get help with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, transfers, and they get medication reminders and personal care, while the clinical team develops person-centered care plans meant to help people regain skills and hopefully avoid going back to the hospital.

The staff have a reputation for being friendly, and people say they're helpful and joyful, which makes for a warm community feeling, and the nurses and dietitians work together to make sure each resident gets nutritious meals, including special diets for allergies or diabetes, with meals managed by a professional chef and meal planner, and if someone can't make it to the dining room, in-room dining is available. Southwood provides memory care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, with an environment designed to reduce confusion and prevent wandering, and residents get around-the-clock supervision with a 12-16 hour nursing service and a 24-hour call and emergency alert system. There are regular activities-things like movies, music programs, scheduled social events, outings, and fitness classes-plus access to a library, activity rooms, fitness and wellness rooms, walking paths, a spa, salon, and garden, so people stay engaged both mentally and socially.

The place takes care of housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and parking, and rooms often have private bathrooms, kitchenettes, telephones, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and cable TV. They allow pets, offer community-sponsored events, and have a move-in coordination service, making the transition a bit smoother for new people. Southwood's a full-service facility, so you'll find assisted living, long-term care, nursing home care, palliative care, respite care, outpatient therapy, and hospice programs all available, plus specialty care like speech, occupational, and physical therapy given by in-house therapists with daily individualized plans.

The facility partners with the North Carolina Health Care Facilities Association and accepts Medicare and Medicaid. The administrator is Taylor Baxley, who oversees a range of clinical and administrative staff. Southwood helps manage many different medical, physical, and psychosocial needs, with services like wound care, cardiopulmonary therapy, IV treatment, and more, and the facility features both private and semi-private rooms, furnished living spaces, and both indoor and outdoor areas to gather. People can find activities for their minds and bodies and get the support they need with things like transfers, medication management, and therapy, whether their stay is short after a hospital visit or long-term as their needs change.
