    Beautiful campus with excellent amenities

I live here and have been very pleased. The campus and apartments are beautiful, spotless, and well kept; staff are warm, attentive and knowledgeable, and the on-site medical/Wellness Office care is excellent. Dining is restaurant-style, activities and fitness/pool options are plentiful, management is responsive and security is strong - almost everything has exceeded my expectations.

    Summary of reviews

Matthews Glen is consistently described as a large, well-appointed continuing-care community with substantial amenities and an active social culture. Strengths cited across reviews include a wide range of apartment floor plans and customization options, attractive brick architecture, well-kept grounds, multiple pool options (indoor/outdoor, heated and saltwater), robust fitness and therapy resources, and on-site medical services including physicians and nursing staff. Residents and visitors frequently note a strong social life—clubs, trips, classes, and regular transportation for appointments and excursions—which contributes to a pronounced sense of community among a large resident population.

Care and staff: Many reviewers praised the attentiveness and familiarity of frontline staff, the presence of an on-site clinic and nurse-practitioner care, and efficient wellness-office operations. These attributes support day-to-day medical access and routine health monitoring for independent-living residents. That said, there are consistent operational concerns about staff responsiveness in certain urgent situations and about variability in clinical-area cleanliness; several reviews described clinical incidents or post-incident communication problems. A single allegation of elder-abuse-related investigation was mentioned; prospective residents should request facility incident-history documentation and regulatory inspection records when evaluating the community.

Dining and activities: Dining is a mixed picture. Numerous accounts highlight restaurant-style dining options, multiple menus, and periods when meals were excellent. However, there is a clear pattern of inconsistent food quality and occasional meal-service reliability problems (reservation systems, phone responsiveness, and cafeteria variability). Activities programming is generally robust—line dancing, trips, classes, and frequent social events—and transportation for both local appointments and longer trips is a recurring positive.

Facilities and operations: The campus amenities and new-construction investment draw strong positive comments: new buildings, an expanding clubhouse, landscaped grounds, secure entry, and clean apartment interiors. Conversely, expansion has been identified as a potential operational risk when growth appears to outpace support services. Reviewers expressed concern that assisted-living and skilled-nursing capacity can be limited or subject to wait lists, creating uncertainty about guaranteed transitions when care needs increase. Maintenance responsiveness and some variability in hospitality/security interactions were also noted as operational weaknesses.

Management, contracts, and affordability: Administrative issues surface repeatedly. Reviewers describe billing errors, limited transparency in communications, and a complaint-resolution process that some found ineffective. Several families warned about contractual language and verbal promises, recommending legal review before signing because rights and fee structures can be complex and, in some accounts, inflexible. High upfront entry costs and ongoing monthly fees are commonly cited affordability barriers despite some contractual protections and long-term-care policy credits.

Notable patterns and recommendations: The overall pattern is one of a well-resourced, socially active community with strong front-line staff and attractive facilities, coupled with operational inconsistencies in dining, administration, maintenance, and continuity-of-care planning during resident transitions. Prospective residents and families should (1) tour dining at multiple times of day, (2) ask for the community’s most recent incident and inspection records, (3) obtain written clarification of contract terms and transition guarantees, (4) review maintenance-response and billing-resolution policies in writing, and (5) discuss current assisted-living/skilled-nursing wait-list practices and capacity planning. These steps will help balance the community’s clear strengths against the operational risks highlighted in reviews.
