    Outstanding compassionate care excellent communication

I'm very pleased with Hillside - family-owned with hands-on leadership and an attentive, compassionate staff who treated my mom like family. The rehab and nursing teams were outstanding, rooms were clean and comfortable, communication with the medical team was excellent, and I'm grateful we chose them and would recommend Hillside.

    Summary of reviews

Hillside Nursing & Rehab elicits strongly mixed impressions. Many families and patients praise the rehabilitation services and therapy teams; physical and occupational therapy, along with wound-care clinicians, are frequently described as professional, effective, and instrumental in measurable recovery. Reviewers also highlight compassionate individual caregivers and nursing staff who provide personalized attention, flexible mealtime assistance, and housekeeping that keeps rooms bright and well maintained. The facilityโ€™s renovated common areas, private-room availability, liberal visitation and pet-friendly policies, and regular social activities (birthday celebrations, Friday socials) are repeatedly cited as positive elements that enhance resident quality of life.

At the same time, recurring operational weaknesses create notable risks for prospective residents. Staffing shortages and high turnover are a common theme and are associated with slow response times, inconsistent personal-care practices, and variability in nurse aide competence. Several accounts describe medication-management problems and breakdowns in clinical coordination, which contributed to safety incidents for some patients. Family-facing communication is frequently characterized as deficient: front-office responsiveness, follow-up paperwork, and discharge coordination are often delayed or incomplete. These administrative gaps extend to billing and customer-service issues; there are specific, serious allegations concerning billing irregularities that prospective families should clarify directly with the facility and regulators if needed.

Facility-level safety and environment concerns also appear repeatedly. Reviewers cite problems with sanitation and pest control in certain areas, odor concerns in nursing wings, and inconsistencies in environmental upkeep despite an attractive lobby and renovation efforts. Access-control and visitor-screening procedures were described as inadequate in some reports, raising questions about security practices. Additionally, there is a pattern of uneven quality between the well-regarded rehab unit and the general nursing units; the rehab areas are often described as well resourced and organized, while some nursing areas appear to struggle with staffing, supplies, and daily care consistency.

For prospective residents and families, Hillside presents a trade-off: a strong, outcome-focused rehabilitation program and many individual staff members who provide excellent, compassionate care, versus system-level deficiencies that affect safety, sanitation, communication, and administrative reliability. When considering Hillside, families should prioritize in-person observation of staffโ€“resident interactions across multiple units, direct questions about medication-safety protocols, staffing ratios (including night and weekend coverage), access-control and visitor policies, pest control and sanitation programs, and written billing/contract terms. Regular, ongoing visitation or a designated family advocate may mitigate some communication and oversight gaps identified in reviews.

With open doors 24 hours a day, but office hours from 8:30 in the morning to 5 in the evening during the week and daily hours running from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., staff keeps things running with care and dedication. Hillside delivers long-term geriatric care, short-term nursing, and various skilled services, with a special effort to keep everything personalized, family-like, and rooted in kindness. The place gets a "Very Good" nursing home rating of 3 stars, and it stands out as a steady choice for those looking for a comforting environment with comprehensive healthcare and support designed for everyday life as well as times of illness or recovery, and, like always, the details do matter when choosing where to live or heal.
