    Compassionate staff, clean rooms, excellent

I had a very positive experience at Rocky Top. The staff were hardworking, knowledgeable and genuinely compassionate-attentive to my father's needs and supportive through his final days. Rooms were clean, admissions helpful, and PT/OT/ST services were excellent; I recommend Rocky Top as a strong, down-to-earth, care-focused choice.

    Summary of reviews

Summit View of Rocky Top elicits strongly mixed impressions. Many reviewers praise individual caregivers and therapy staff for compassion, attentiveness, and clinical competence; these staff members are cited for providing supportive hands-on care, effective PT/OT/ST services, and a helpful admissions experience. Several accounts describe a warm initial impression on entry and a down-to-earth environment, with some residents noting clean private rooms, nighttime snack availability, and responsive medication administration.

Counterbalancing those positives are recurring operational concerns. A number of reviewers describe delays in accessing medical attention and inconsistent responses from clinical staff, along with difficulties obtaining medications. Staffing shortages and absenteeism appear to be an ongoing pattern that contributes to slow caregiver response times and irregular personal-care schedules (for example, infrequent bathing and delayed toileting assistance). There are also multiple comments about staff conduct and communication tone, including defensive reactions when families raise issues.

Dining and nutrition are frequent areas of complaint: reviewers cite poor meal quality, cold food, and inconsistent adherence to prescribed dietary restrictions. Facility and grounds upkeep is another area of concern, with sanitation and odor concerns reported in common spaces and comments about a run-down appearance. Maintenance capability is described as variableโ€”specific maintenance staff received praise while replacements were described as less competent.

Safety and security-related issues appear in several narratives. There are allegations of theft and weaknesses in financial controls for resident money and personal items; these are serious claims that several family members raised. Additionally, restrictive or inconsistently applied resident-movement policies and slow transfer/admission processes have been noted as operational weaknesses.

Management and leadership receive mixed evaluations. Some respondents describe strong, caring administration, while others report uneven policy enforcement, rehiring or turnover practices that undermine continuity, and a punitive environment that has driven experienced CNAs away. These management inconsistencies link to many of the operational problems families identify: staffing reliability, timely transfers, and enforcement of resident-centered policies.

Notable patterns: strengths concentrate in direct-care relationships and therapy services, while weaknesses cluster around institutional operationsโ€”staffing stability, clinical responsiveness, meal service quality, sanitation, and safeguards for resident belongings. Prospective residents and families interested in Summit View should arrange an on-site visit, speak directly with current residents and families about day-to-day routines, and ask targeted questions about staffing ratios, medication and valuables controls, dining and dietary management, cleaning/housekeeping protocols, therapy availability, and the facilityโ€™s process for escalations and transfers. Observing meal service, checking recent inspection or complaint records, and requesting references from current families can help clarify whether the facilityโ€™s strengths align with a prospective residentโ€™s priorities.

About Summit View of Rocky Top

Summit View of Rocky Top is a medium-sized senior care facility located in Rocky Top, Tennessee, offering both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care services. With 117 beds and for-profit LLC ownership, Summit View of Rocky Top is designed to provide support and healthcare for older adults who require either temporary assistance following a hospital stay or more permanent, daily care owing to medical or personal needs. The facility is not part of a continuing care retirement community, but it is certified to participate in both Medicare and Medicaid programs, facilitating access and affordability for a wide range of residents.

Short-term rehabilitation at Summit View of Rocky Top is focused on helping patients recover from hospitalizations due to illnesses, injuries, or surgeries such as strokes, heart attacks, infections, or accidents. Original Medicare typically covers rehabilitation stays of up to 100 days in specific circumstances, with residents benefiting from specialized support aimed at preparing them to return home. About 40.6% of residents receiving short-term rehabilitation have been able to transition back to their homes after discharge. Healthcare delivery is supported by a staffing pattern that averages 2 hours and 59 minutes of nursing care per resident per day. Weekend staffing is noted to be highly consistent with weekday staffing, ensuring steady care throughout the week. The facility prioritizes preventive care as well, with 98% of residents receiving annual flu vaccinations, an essential service for protecting older adults.

Long-term care at Summit View of Rocky Top addresses the needs of individuals who require sustained assistance with daily living activities and medical oversight. Approximately 89.3% of residents maintain an ability to move, eat, and perform other common activities without help, reflecting an emphasis on preserving independence where possible. Emergency room visits are relatively low among the long-term care population, with 2.2 visits per 1,000 patient days, indicating that most healthcare needs are managed effectively within the facility.

Safety, nursing care, and patient wellbeing are key components of the environment at Summit View of Rocky Top. State inspections examine the quality of food preparation, safety in the physical environment, and how well the home responds to resident needs and incidents. While the facility has experienced citations in the past related to resident notification, prevention of abuse, pressure ulcer care, accident prevention, and registered nurse staffing, these were noted as involving a low potential for harm and affected a small number of residents. All issues have fixed dates documented.

Summit View of Rocky Top aims to provide a stable and responsive caregiving setting for seniors, balancing specialized rehabilitation services with ongoing support for residents who need long-term help. Participation in Medicare and Medicaid helps extend care options to many families, and the facilityโ€™s focus on consistent staffing, preventive health measures, and individualized daily support underscores its commitment to both recovery and sustained wellbeing for its residents.
