    Warm attentive care eased transition

I placed my mom at Chestnut Grove and have been very pleased - the staff are warm, attentive, and know residents by name, offering individualized care that made the move much easier. The meals are excellent, the home is clean and cozy, and there are plenty of activities and outings to keep her engaged. Housekeeping, meds, and on-site services give me real peace of mind; I'd recommend touring Chestnut Grove.

    Summary of reviews

Chestnut Grove elicits sharply mixed impressions that cluster around two contrasting experiences: families who describe warm, attentive caregiving and an active, clean community, and families who highlight operational inconsistencies that materially affected care. On the positive side, many accounts emphasize compassionate direct-care staff, an engaged activities program (often credited to a creative activities director), well-prepared meals included in the fee, spacious apartments, and pleasant common spaces such as a courtyard. The facility also offers an on-site memory-care unit and medical services, regular outings, and admissions/transition assistance that families found helpful.

At the same time, a consistent pattern of operational weaknesses emerges. Staffing instability and high turnover are central concerns and appear to drive several downstream problems: uneven nurse availability (notably in evenings), gaps in medication administration and reordering controls, and inconsistent continuity of care. Families described instances where medication processes and timely clinical follow-up were unreliable; these concerns suggest the facility’s medication-management systems and supervisory oversight need verification during a tour and discharge planning.

Management and leadership continuity are areas of mixed performance. Some families described professional, courteous management and prompt resolution of issues, while others perceived frequent leadership changes, limited transparency, and inconsistent responsiveness to family concerns. This variability in supervisory oversight corresponds with accounts of uneven housekeeping and maintenance practices, occasional heating or odor concerns in specific units, and a sense among some that programmatic promises (testing, activities, or timely interventions) were not consistently met.

Dining and activities are strengths when functioning as intended: meals are frequently described as enjoyable, staff know residents by name, and activities can be creative and socially engaging. However, families should note that activity offerings and schedules have been canceled or scaled back at times, and smaller or memory-care areas may offer fewer options. Facility condition is generally described as clean and homelike, with some reviewers praising bright, roomy units; others point to dated finishes, slope/accessibility issues, or isolated maintenance items that would benefit from updates.

Overall recommendation for prospective families: Chestnut Grove can provide a warm, social environment with caring staff and solid amenities, but it exhibits variability in clinical and operational reliability. When evaluating the community, prioritize clarifying current staffing ratios and evening nurse coverage, medication-administration and reordering protocols, leadership tenure and communication practices, housekeeping schedules, and the consistency of activity programming. Consider arranging meetings with nursing leadership, reviewing recent inspection or health department records, and asking about options such as in-room monitoring or enhanced oversight to address specific clinical concerns.

    About Chestnut Grove Assisted Living

Chestnut Grove Assisted Living sits in the Richmond area and stands out as one of the newest senior communities with a focus on comfort, independence, and daily engagement, where folks find a welcoming place with 50 assisted-living suites and 25 memory care suites, so there are plenty of spaces for both those needing some help and those with memory concerns. The community features private studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, with large layouts, two closets, a big pantry, a private bathroom with an optional shower bench, and a kitchenette with a microwave, sink, and refrigerator, plus individual heat and air conditioning controls, all of which let residents bring in their own furnishings and feel at home. The staff keep a close eye on residents' needs, doing both medical and functional assessments before move-in and as needs change, making sure everyone gets the right level of care, whether it's base assisted living or two additional care levels designed to fit personal needs.

For those who need more, there's a full complement of personal care, including help with bathing, dressing, medications, emergency reminders, and care for diabetic and non-ambulatory residents, while others find support with incontinence care. Chestnut Grove has a busy daily activities calendar, resident-led gatherings, arts programs, movie nights, outings, and even its own library and game room, and there's an enclosed courtyard called the English Garden with a gazebo, raised beds, and walking paths, where residents can sit or garden or walk, and if you want to stay active, there's a wellness center with fitness and physical therapy programs, plus on-site spa and salon services for haircuts and personal grooming.

The community runs on month-to-month leases and accepts veterans benefits, long-term care insurance, and private pay, with all apartments including utilities, basic cable TV, complimentary WiFi, housekeeping, linen and laundry service, and individual emergency response systems, so residents have peace of mind. People can enjoy three nutritious meals cooked by talented chefs in a dining room that overlooks the courtyard, or eat in a private room for family get-togethers, and snacks come along every day, too. The community score on Seniorly sits at 8.6, based on reviews as well as safety and livability.

For memory care, Chestnut Grove has the Morning Glory community, a secured area with staff specifically trained in Alzheimer's and dementia care, offering a supervised setting that helps reduce confusion and prevent wandering, and providing both lifestyle and support services to help residents with cognitive decline live comfortably. There's also respite care for short stays and home care services for those needing temporary or flexible support. Residents have everything from scheduled transportation and public transit access to parking, plus inside lounges, a fully equipped library, and daily programs that aim to keep everyone engaged and connected.

People living at Chestnut Grove Assisted Living have access to physical, occupational, and speech therapy, medical services, and wellness checks, with nurses available 12-16 hours per day and call systems in every room for emergencies - though this isn't a skilled nursing facility, so around-the-clock medical care isn't included, but there's always someone available for help. The English Garden makes a good spot to get fresh air, and the living rooms and communal dining spaces keep a traditional, homelike feeling. Housekeeping is provided, linen is changed weekly, and apartments have room for personal items and décor, letting residents keep social ties and a sense of independence. Pets are allowed, and residents can use controlled building entry for added security, with scheduled outings and day trips for those who like to get out.

Many families find that Chestnut Grove offers real attention to personal needs, tailoring support plans with help from family, residents, and healthcare providers, always focused on compassion and helping everyone feel comfortable. The amenities are practical, from emergency response systems to meal services and recreation areas, with services meant to meet needs as they change. For those looking into senior living options in Richmond, Chestnut Grove Assisted Living provides assisted living, rehabilitation care, memory care, and respite care in a straightforward environment that values dignity, daily engagement, and resident well-being, and while nothing's ever perfect, the community does its best to set a high standard for comfort, support, and a home-like atmosphere.
