    Spotless facility, friendly attentive staff

I'm very pleased with the care here - the staff are friendly, attentive and hospitable, the facility is spotless and well-kept, and my stepfather felt right at home. Meals in the eat-in room were excellent and it felt like good value; private rooms and staff who go out of their way made his stay comfortable. I'd highly recommend this place, though I'm still exploring assisted living options nearby in Carthage, NC.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive with important and recurring reservations. Multiple reviewers emphasize a clean, well-maintained facility that feels homey and comfortable. Many comments praise the staff as friendly, attentive, and hospitable; several reviewers explicitly state that their family members liked or were comfortable with the caregivers. The dining experience is another commonly cited strength — meals are described as good or very good, with an eat-in dining option appreciated by residents and families. Reviewers also mention that Dogwood Crossing offers good value, and several recommend it as a solid choice for care.

Care quality appears generally competent for many residents, with several reviewers noting good overall care and efforts by staff to help with activities of daily living. There are positive notes about flexibility and autonomy for residents, including outings and attempts to involve residents in activities. Staff members are frequently described as trying to help and being attentive, which contributes to the facility’s welcoming atmosphere and multiple recommendations in the reviews.

However, there are significant and specific concerns that create a mixed picture. Staffing levels were described as short at times, and a number of reviewers reported inconsistent staff performance — with specific aides or nursing staff singled out for problems. Communication issues between staff/management and families are mentioned repeatedly; some families felt they were not kept fully informed. One reviewer reported a very serious clinical issue: a pressure sore attributed to wheelchair use. That reviewer also reported being discharged (“kicked out due to grade 4”) and alleged that nurses lied, leading that person to strongly advise against the facility. These allegations, while representing a minority of the comments, are severe and stand in contrast to the many positive notes about staff friendliness.

Activities and social engagement present a mixed record. Several reviewers noted attempts to get residents involved in activities, but others said activity options were limited — in at least one case because of Covid lockdowns. Some residents had difficulty adjusting to the community, and one family indicated they were considering nearby assisted living options and wanted a private room, suggesting that availability or fit for certain care needs may be variable.

Patterns across the reviews indicate a facility that often succeeds at creating a clean, pleasant environment with staff who are warm and provide good meals, yet struggles with occasional lapses in clinical care, staffing consistency, and communication. The most frequent positives are cleanliness, staff friendliness, the homey feel, and good dining. The most consequential negatives are short staffing, inconsistent staff conduct, breakdowns in communication, and at least one serious wound-care incident and disputed discharge. Families considering Dogwood Crossing should weigh the generally strong atmosphere and dining / hospitality strengths against the occasional but serious reports of care and communication failures. Prospective families might ask specifically about staffing levels, wound-care protocols, communication practices, private room availability, and how the facility handled Covid-related activity restrictions when making decisions.

About Dogwood Crossing Senior Living and Memory Care

Dogwood Crossing Senior Living And Memory Care sits in the rolling hills of Tazewell, Virginia, and gives seniors a quiet spot to call home, with different care options like independent living, assisted living, and memory care, so folks can stay as their needs change. Every resident has a private or companion room with its own bathroom, its own heating or cooling, cable TV, and wireless internet, which makes things feel more like home, and every room includes an emergency call system in the bedroom and bathroom for extra peace of mind. The staff is professionally trained, with nurses on duty and on call around the clock, and they help with daily needs like bathing, dressing, medication, and meals-so you don't have to worry about cooking or remembering pills.

People can enjoy three meals a day with snacks any time, and staff take care of laundry, housekeeping, and linens, which pretty much means seniors don't have to worry about chores. There's an on-site beauty salon and comfortable community areas and sunrooms, so people can gather, read, or just enjoy the view. The activity staff organize daily events, hobbies, and plenty of ways to connect with others, and residents can keep in touch with family by email, Facebook, or YouTube. Memory care services are available, focused on those with Alzheimer's or other memory conditions, with caregivers trained to help with all the extra needs that come with memory loss, and those rooms and spaces are set up to make sure everyone's safe.

Medical alert systems like Medical Guardian and ADT Medical Alert are part of the technology safety net, and hearing aid resources, senior cell phones, and internet options make it easier for everyone to stay connected. Staff are always doing well-being checks, making sure residents feel comfortable and supported, and the community is set up so people can get more help as they get older without having to move out. Transportation is provided for appointments or trips, and veterans can use Aid and Attendance benefits here.

Dogwood Crossing aims for a calm and cozy home where seniors can keep their independence with the right support, and because it's in a rural area, the setting's pretty quiet with space to relax and enjoy simple pleasures. If someone needs respite care or ongoing memory care in a secure, home-like place that's managed by a caring staff, this place is designed for comfort, safety, and support, with no need to handle housework or daily chores alone.
