    Caring staff, clean homelike environment

My dad has lived at Somerset for over eight years and we've been very happy - the staff are consistently caring, professional and responsive, and the facility is clean, homey and well-maintained. Meals are good (salad bar and bright dining room), and there's a lively calendar of activities from Bible study and camera club to crafts and outdoor events around the koi pond and gazebo. Management is attentive, health care is available 24/7, and common areas are inviting and nicely decorated. I'd recommend Somerset for its friendly, personal atmosphere and solid long-term living options.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Somerset Retirement Home and Assisted Living in Longview projects a consistently positive, home‑oriented environment with strong emphasis on social engagement and attentive day‑to‑day operations. Reviewers describe the facility as clean, well maintained, and attractively decorated; the property features common spaces on each floor, a bright dining room, a library, a koi pond and gazebo, and other communal areas that reinforce a residential rather than institutional feel.

Care and staff: Staffing and care emerge as clear strengths. Families and residents characterize staff as friendly, patient, and caring; office, nursing, and dining personnel receive repeated praise for professionalism and responsiveness. The facility advertises 24/7 professional health and safety support, and reviewers note prompt maintenance responses and timely attention to resident needs. The privately owned, small‑community atmosphere is repeatedly described as family‑like, with staff that adapt programming (including outdoor events during COVID) and provide personalized assistance when needed.

Dining: The dining program is frequently highlighted. The dining area is described as bright and pleasant, with a salad bar and an upper‑end feel. Reviewers express satisfaction with meal quality and variety; the facility organizes communal meals and special holiday tables that contribute to social dining experiences.

Activities and social life: Somerset offers an extensive activity calendar that includes bingo, singing, Bible studies, knitting and arts & crafts, movie nights, tournaments, camera club meetings, transportation for outings, and organized trips. An activities director receives specific praise for creativity and engagement. These programs and the availability of transportation make the community well suited to residents seeking an active social schedule.

Facilities and apartments: The building is a three‑story layout with accessible common areas on each floor and an easy‑to‑navigate plan. Private one‑bedroom apartments include basic kitchenettes with a microwave and apartment‑sized refrigerator; residents furnish units themselves. Reviewers generally find the units adequate for independent living, though apartment size is described as modest. The grounds include a koi pond, walking area, benches, and a back porch with seating, but outdoor space is characterized as comparatively small.

Management and operations: Management and ownership receive favorable comments for maintaining a homey, non‑corporate culture and for providing responsive maintenance and event programming. Reviewers note that rates have risen but remain aligned with comparable local options; prospective residents should review contract terms and budget for incremental increases.

Notable patterns and considerations: The dominant patterns are strong staff–resident relationships, an active activities program, and a clean, well‑kept property that emphasizes communal spaces. Practical considerations for prospective residents include the limited in‑unit cooking facilities (no stove/oven) and the modest size of one‑bedroom apartments and grounds—factors that matter for people who expect to prepare full meals in their unit or who prioritize larger private outdoor space. For seniors seeking an engaged, socially active, and well‑maintained community with personalized staff attention, Somerset appears to be a good fit; for those requiring full kitchens or more expansive private outdoor space, it may be less suitable.
