    Caring, responsive home-like senior community

I'm very pleased with this community - the director and staff are caring, responsive, and truly team-oriented. It feels like home: clean, welcoming, single-floor apartment living with home-cooked meals, engaging activities, pet-friendly grounds, and strong safety/COVID practices. Communication with family is excellent and staff supported us through tough times; I highly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Highlander Place presents as a small, recently updated assisted living community that many families describe as clean, well-maintained, and welcoming. The facility emphasizes a home-like, single-floor layout with bright rooms, garden or woods views, and renovated in-unit features such as refrigerators, microwaves, and walk-in showers. Shared amenities include a salon, activity and dining rooms, computers, and a landscaped courtyard; the community is also pet-friendly and designed to be easy to navigate for residents with cognitive impairment.

Care and staffing are consistently highlighted as strengths. Reviewers frequently cite compassionate, attentive caregivers, supportive nursing staff, proactive administration, and strong maintenance and housekeeping teams. Staff communication—including email updates and family outreach—is often described as reassuring, and the facility has supported families through end-of-life and hospice situations. At the same time, several comments suggest variability in staff performance and responsiveness, and the community does not position itself as a substitute for 24-hour skilled nursing; residents with higher medical needs have required transfer to more clinical settings.

Dining and nourishment are among the community's positive attributes. Meals are described as homemade with multiple daily choices and the ability to accommodate dietary needs (including diabetes-friendly options). Families appreciate opportunities to join residents for meals. A minority of comments point to occasional inconsistencies in meal quality.

The activity program is robust in scope—bingo, exercise, arts and crafts, concerts, barbecues, outings, and themed events are regularly offered—and contributes to social engagement for many residents. However, program continuity appears dependent on a single Activities Coordinator in this small setting; when that person is unavailable, activity offerings can drop off, reducing options for residents who rely on scheduled programming for socialization.

On the facilities and operational side, Highlander Place scores well for cleanliness, upkeep, and a secure single-floor design that eases mobility. Drawbacks noted by families include relatively small apartment footprints and a somewhat remote, less walkable location. Cost is a recurring consideration: the community is described as more expensive than some alternatives and does not accept Medicaid, and a few families reported concerns about clarity of pricing or post-move-in fee changes.

Overall pattern: many families and long-term residents report high satisfaction, praising the personal attention, safety, and sense of community. The facility appears well suited to residents seeking a small, personal assisted-living environment with active social programming and dependable everyday care. Prospective residents with high medical or 24-hour nursing needs, strict budget constraints, or a priority on transit-oriented location should weigh those factors and ask specific questions about nursing coverage, fee transparency, activity staffing redundancy, and visitation policies during tours.

About Trustwell Living at Highlander Place

Trustwell Living at Highlander Place is a senior living community in Kelso, Washington, set in a country area where you might see deer and squirrels outside, and it's got only one floor so there are no stairs anywhere, which makes things easier for anyone who needs a walker or just doesn't feel steady going up and down. The community is small, with just 40 rooms, so it feels close-knit and familiar, and people often run into their neighbors for a chat on the sunny front porch or around the lounge fireplace. Residents can pick from studio apartments, which have about 354 square feet, or one-bedroom apartments with about 594 square feet, and the apartments come with private bathrooms with step-in showers, kitchenettes with microwaves, and big windows that let in the light, and there's plenty of space to make it personal and cozy. There's no need to worry about cleaning because weekly housekeeping and laundry services are part of the deal, and maintenance is taken care of too. The dining area serves meals restaurant-style with menus put together by a registered dietitian, so meals are healthy and you don't have to cook, though if it's a night to stay in the apartment, the kitchenette is handy.

The facility is managed by Enlivant, which runs more than 200 senior living residences, so they know what they're doing, and there's always staff on hand 24/7 to help with personal needs like bathing, dressing, grooming, or getting to meals. If medications are needed, there's help to make sure they're taken on time. There's a full-time registered nurse for those who need a little more clinical oversight. People can choose either private or companion apartments and get personalized care plans, and levels of care include assisted living, memory care, independent living, respite care, nursing home services, and continuing care, so residents can get the help that's right for them as time goes on.

Community life includes daily activities like exercise classes, blackjack card games, ice cream socials, trivia, coffee socials, movie nights, and more, and the game room, creative studio, outdoor patio, and full-service salon offer spaces to spend time alone or with friends. There's a courtyard for fresh air, and transportation services for shopping or group outings, so residents don't have to worry about getting around. There are emergency call systems in every apartment, so help is always close by. Trustwell Living at Highlander Place tries to help each person stay independent but also stay connected to others, and people can schedule a tour to see the place, meet the staff, and get a feel for the daily life there. The building's designed for comfort and safety, with bright spaces and no stairs, and the staff focus on helping people feel at home.
