    Compassionate staff, homey apartments, recommended

I placed my mom here and I'm very pleased. Staff are compassionate, welcoming, and truly go above and beyond - office and maintenance are proactive and helpful. The apartments are bright and homey, the homemade food is excellent, there are plenty of activities, and the 24-hour call system gives real peace of mind. It feels like family and I'd gladly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

HeatherWood Assisted Living & Memory Care is consistently described as a small, home-like community with an emphasis on resident dignity and personalized attention. Reviewers emphasize compassionate, attentive caregiving and a leadership team that families find engaged and responsive. The facility’s physical environment receives frequent praise: clean, bright interiors; well-kept grounds and gardens; an inviting chapel and activity spaces; and a variety of on-site amenities such as a beauty shop and library delivery. Safety features and 24-hour assistance are highlighted as contributors to resident peace of mind.

Dining and programming are distinctive strengths. Multiple accounts reference freshly prepared meals, use of garden produce, a restaurant-club concept for special meals and outings, and flexibility in meal choices. A broad mix of opt-in activities is offered — exercise classes, outings (theater, zoo), musical visits, crafts, games, and organized social dining — with many residents described as socially active and engaged. The community also coordinates transportation and trips, and reviewers note effective hospice collaboration and bereavement support when needed.

Staff culture and management are recurring positive themes. Long-tenure staff and several named team members are cited for providing individualized attention, regular communication with families, and going above-and-beyond in care coordination. Families mention that staff know residents by name and work to preserve independence while providing appropriate supports. Memory-care transition processes and individualized care planning are described positively when placements occur, and there are specific references to dignified, respectful end-of-life care coordination.

At the same time, the reviews surface several operational concerns prospective families should evaluate. Staffing variability and occasional shortages are noted, with differences in competence and familiarity between longer‑term staff and temporary or short-term personnel. Memory-care capacity is limited, creating wait times and constrained placement options. A few reviewers raised water‑safety concerns specifically tied to Legionella and questioned the strength of the facility’s remediation response; prospective families should directly ask about water‑safety protocols and recent corrective actions. Licensing constraints affecting access to particular wings (RCAC/CBRF distinctions) were also mentioned and may limit placement flexibility.

Other practical considerations include limited availability of larger apartment layouts for those seeking separate bedroom/living-room configurations, and cost/affordability concerns for some prospective residents. There are also occasional notes about variable infection-control practices (including masking policy differences) and sporadic lower activity engagement in particular units; these suggest the resident experience can vary by neighborhood within the community. Taken together, HeatherWood presents as a well-maintained, compassionate community with strong programming and a family culture, but prospective residents and families should confirm current staffing stability, memory-care availability, licensing implications, water‑safety remediation, and apartment-size options during a visit.

About HeatherWood Assisted Living & Memory Care

HeatherWood Assisted Living & Memory Care sits in a tree-lined neighborhood in Washington, WI, close to Walmart and near the Highway 53 and Interstate 94 interchange in southeast Eau Claire, offering folks an affordable place to live as they grow older, and it really has a friendly and helpful staff known for treating everyone with kindness and respect, which is what you want for a place like this, and the staff sticks to values like goodness, loyalty, faith, and fun, which means people there try to look after each other and keep things lively, and with a 5.0 rating from residents and past awards for satisfaction, the community works hard to keep folks happy and safe. They guide their care by integrity and compassion, making sure each person gets help with what they need, whether it's assisted living-like help with dressing, bathing, meals, medications-or specialized memory care for people living with memory loss, Alzheimer's, or dementia, where the layout aims to reduce confusion and help prevent wandering, and they've got a dedicated team including a part-time nurse and specialized staff for physical or cognitive support. The place is on one campus and has 29 apartments in the RCAC and 8 in the CBRF, which means there are studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, so people have choices, and they're roomy, sound-proof, and have private, wheelchair accessible bathrooms with walk-in showers and some kitchens with full-sized fridges and microwaves, plus heating and cooling that folks control themselves, so it feels homey, and everyone can decorate how they want.

The community allows pets, and has services for those who want to stay active or try new hobbies, with games, outings, fitness and wellness programs, and a real effort to keep life interesting, and when it comes to care, the team creates personalized plans with families, working with doctors and nurses, and gives 24-hour security, medication assistance, continence care, and mobility support based on what each person needs. Meals are a big focus too, with tasty food, special diets for things like diabetes or low salt, and help for anyone with eating limitations, and you'll also find salon, housekeeping, laundry, and linen services, so daily living is easier. HeatherWood's memory care program is tailored for residents with Alzheimer's or memory issues, offering a steady routine and small group activities to help with memory and emotions, and with the community being licensed (RCAC and CBRF) and checked for compliance twice a year, it follows the rules and keeps its standards up. Staff speak English, and the facility supports Veterans through VA Aid & Assistance. Residents can take trips, shop, volunteer, and keep their community connections, and the goal is for everyone to age with dignity and independence, supported by people who care about making life meaningful through honest effort and personal attention, so while nobody can promise perfection, HeatherWood does focus on making each day the best it can be for every resident.
