    Warm, clean, engaging memory care

I toured Avalon Square for my mom and was very pleased - the staff are warm, responsive and truly caring, which made the move from independent to memory care a smooth transition. The sunny, recently remodeled building is immaculately clean and in a convenient downtown location. On-site medical and therapy services, abundant delicious dining (cafeteria/50s café with flexible breakfasts), and a wide variety of activities keep residents engaged and social. Families are kept informed and the overall atmosphere is compassionate and reassuring - I would recommend Avalon Square.

    Summary of reviews

Avalon Square presents as a well-maintained, recently updated senior living community with a broad array of on-site services and amenities. Reviewers commonly describe the physical environment as clean, bright, and renovated; common spaces and apartments are often characterized as sunny and attractive. The campus offers secure access, underground parking, a fitness center, and convenient downtown location—features that support both safety and lifestyle convenience.

Staff and care quality receive frequent praise for compassion, attentiveness, and family-oriented touches. Multiple reviewers note accessible leadership and an executive director who is responsive, as well as coordinated supports such as on-site physical therapy, periodic medical services (e.g., vaccinations and podiatry), hospice and pastoral care. These strengths contribute to a sense of continuity for residents who move between independent living and higher-care levels within the same building.

Dining and programming are consistent strengths. Meals are described as plentiful, varied, and enjoyable, with flexible breakfast options and informal café spaces. Activity programming is extensive and diverse—daily classes, fitness offerings, social events, guest speakers, outings, and themed entertainment are cited repeatedly and appear to foster strong social connections among residents.

Despite many positives, there are recurring operational concerns that prospective residents and families should evaluate. The most significant pattern involves the memory-care unit: reviewers describe variability in staffing, supervision, and clinical oversight. Related operational weaknesses include inconsistencies in incontinence-care practices and documentation, slow responses to call lights or assistance requests, and uneven CNA training and conduct. A number of reviewers also raised concerns about how clinical incidents and family communications are handled, and there are accounts of restrictive nighttime room-locking practices in the memory-care area that warrant clarification.

Other practical issues mentioned include occasional entry/buzzer delays for visitors, limited parking at peak times, and a perception that pricing can be steep relative to expectations. Overall, Avalon Square appears to deliver a high level of amenities, active programming, and many attentive staff members; however, variability in front-line staffing and specific memory-care operational practices create areas for careful inquiry. Recommended next steps for prospective residents or family members include asking about staffing ratios and turnover in memory care, call-response metrics and protocols, incontinence-care and documentation procedures, nighttime security policies, and how clinical incidents are communicated to families.

    About Avalon Square

Avalon Square sits at 222 Park Place in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in a building with old limestone walls and a past as the Avalon Hotel, and you'll see it listed in the Wisconsin Architecture and History Inventory under reference number 94273 if you want to look up more history, and you can always visit the Wisconsin Historical Society to check out their site file with newspaper clippings and old notes about the property, which was built in a style called English Revival back in 1928 and used to be a lodging hotel for travelers, and now you'll find roomy, nicely-designed living spaces with windows updated since 2014, lots of green lawns, and newer construction to the east. The community offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care, so there are apartment homes for seniors who want no-maintenance living, those who need daily help, and those who need special support for memory loss from caring staff with extra training, including services for folks with Alzheimer's or dementia in a secure area. Residents can enjoy three daily meals made with quality ingredients, basic cable TV, individually controlled heat and air, underground parking, an in-home washer and dryer, stainless appliances, and granite countertops, and some apartments even have gas fireplaces and extra storage. Housekeeping, on-site maintenance, and salon services are available, and there's a fitness center, art room, library, wireless internet, and even a beautiful courtyard out back for getting fresh air, along with business office help and a chapel for spiritual care with campus pastors. Activities at Avalon Square fill the calendar with art classes, games, social events, and educational times, so seniors can keep their minds and bodies active, plus guests are welcome for dining and special events if family or friends want to visit. There's a culture of love and a sense of belonging here, with residents, staff, volunteers, and family coming together, and folks often mention the cheerful and helpful team, who are known to be friendly and responsive, according to awards for Best Meals and Dining, Best Activities, and Most Friendly. Avalon Square is managed with care in mind, offering wellness and rehab programs, disaster recovery resources, and even unique guides and toolkits, like the POAMN Older Adult Ministry Guide and the Affordable Housing Toolkit, as part of its connection to the Presbyterian Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. The campus supports all sorts of needs, with non-ambulatory care, incontinence care, diabetic care, home health care, and hospice services available for those who require a higher level of support, and all residents have access to green spaces, communal gathering areas, and a lively, faith-based community where everyone can find their place.
