    Very pleased with independent living

I moved my mom to Kittay House and have been very pleased. The staff are warm, kind and helpful; the building is clean, secure, and well-run with weekly housekeeping, three meals, and plenty of activities (classes, movies, music, outings). Her sunny studio with garden views felt like home quickly and she made friends; convenient location and supportive move-in staff made the transition smooth. I would definitely recommend it for independent living.

    Summary of reviews

Kittay Senior Apartments presents as an active, service-rich independent living community with several consistently noted strengths. Many families and residents praise the friendliness and warmth of the staff, a broad slate of activities (live music, sing-alongs, films, choirs, exercise classes, outings), and a tangible sense of community among tenants. The building offers a wide range of on-site amenities — library, exercise room, salon/barber, movie/theater room, garden and outdoor seating — and units are often described as bright, well-laid-out, and garden-facing. Weekly housekeeping, included meals with dining-room and delivery options, and a visible security presence are additional institutional strengths.

Care and staffing show a mixed picture. Several accounts describe attentive, knowledgeable aides and long-term home-health support that helped residents remain independent. Conversely, other accounts indicate variability in staff responsiveness and conduct, and an operational pattern of reduced staffing levels after management or ownership changes. Prospective residents who need more hands-on or round-the-clock assistance should assess staffing ratios and on-site clinical resources carefully, because the facility appears best suited to residents who retain a degree of independence or who arrange for supplemental private care.

Dining and food-service are polarized in the feedback. The facility’s dining room and meal-delivery system are appreciated by many; sample-meal experiences and the dining environment receive positive comments. At the same time, there are recurring operational complaints about inconsistent meal temperature, occasional soggy or overcooked vegetables, stale bread, and menu choices that some find atypical. Meal quality and temperature control appear to be uneven and are an area to evaluate during a tour and sample meal.

Programs and social life are clear strengths. Activities are varied, often well-coordinated by staff, residents, and volunteers, and range from cultural programming to practical exercise and arts development. The community atmosphere and frequent programming contribute to social engagement and reports of residents making friends quickly. COVID-related reductions in programming were noted in some accounts, so current activity levels should be confirmed before move-in.

Facilities and apartments generally receive favorable comments for cleanliness, layout, light, and on-site conveniences such as microwaves, refrigerators, private showers, and garden/outdoor space. Limitations include generally smaller unit footprints, limited one-bedroom availability, and the absence of in-unit stoves — features that may affect residents who prefer to cook. Operational issues such as spotty cleanliness in certain areas, slow elevators, and limited visitor parking have been raised and merit inspection during a visit.

Management and operations show mixed impressions. Several families commend the director and front-line administrative staff as helpful and informative. Other comments describe communication gaps, diminished follow-up, and a perceived decline in services after ownership or management transitions. Security experiences are similarly mixed: some describe attentive security, while others note lapses or inconsistent access control. There are also divergent views on value: some residents find the pricing cost-effective for the services included, while others feel the price is high relative to the level of care provided.

Bottom line: Kittay Senior Apartments appears to offer a robust social environment, a broad range of amenities, and well-appointed, light-filled apartments that suit many independent seniors who want an active community with included services. Prospective residents whose needs include reliable, frequent hands-on care, consistent meal quality/temperature, or larger in-unit kitchens should conduct focused, in-person evaluations — including a meal sample, staffing-ratio questions, and inspection of parking, elevator access, and security procedures — to determine if the facility’s current operational profile aligns with their care and lifestyle requirements.

    About Kittay Senior Apartments

Kittay Senior Apartments sits in the Bronx on a big garden campus and has 295 studio and one-bedroom apartments, some with balconies or patios, all designed for older adults who want to live in New York City with both privacy and a lively community close by, and you'll find wide hallways, elevators, and other features that help folks get around more easily. The apartments have kitchenettes, private bathrooms, and emergency call bells that staff at Kittay House monitor around the clock, plus there's cable or satellite TV if you want it. Residents can join independent or assisted living services, get extra help with things like bathing or managing their medicines, and if needed use home care, adult day care, nursing, rehab, or specialized memory care for Alzheimer's or related conditions that helps keep confusion down and safety up.

Three meals a day are served, already included in what you pay, and the kitchens are set up for seniors so you don't have to worry, and there's weekly housekeeping too. There's a dining room where neighbors often meet, and folks can also enjoy Wi-Fi, a computer center, and a large-print library, which really makes a difference if you like to read but struggle with small print. A fitness center, beauty and barber shop, convenience store, and extensive gardens make daily life a bit easier and more pleasant and you'll see people talking in common areas or sitting outside when weather's nice. The gardens and balconies give you views of the city or the landscaped grounds, which people say are peaceful to walk through or just sit and watch the world go by.

A big part of what makes Kittay different is all the cultural and social programs that go on all the time, and if you want to stay busy or make new friends, there's always something planned: exercise classes, book clubs, an open artist studio for painting or crafts, choir, live concerts, day trips to museums or restaurants, even movie showings and poetry writing workshops. There are field trips into Manhattan or around New York, either with the group or just to meet up with family. There's support for many different faiths with religious services, and gathering places where people chat or join in on classes. The staff helps out with health screenings, social services, and transportation, especially for those living in subsidized apartments, and there's extra help for Medicaid recipients. Bailey Taxi & Limousine Corp, Jewish Home Hospital Kittay House, and others have ties to the community, too.

The atmosphere is a mix of friendliness, diversity, and activity, and the people living here come from all sorts of walks of life, reflecting the city outside. Some call it a restorative place, with a mosaic of residents and a big effort to help everyone feel at home without giving up their personal space or routines, and there's always an open door for anyone wanting to join in or just keep to themselves. Kittay Senior Apartments is part of The New Jewish Home, so it gets support from a bigger group that's familiar with elders' needs and city living, and the Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities program works with them to help people age in place for as long as possible with dignity. There's a convenience store on campus, community meeting rooms, arts and crafts rooms, outdoor sitting spots, and spaces for private gatherings, so when family or friends visit you can spend time together comfortably.

Kittay offers independent and assisted living under one roof, along with services like memory care, home care, and rehab if needed, and subsidized options for people on limited incomes. Between supportive staff and social activities, people can stay as active or private as they like, and there's little pressure to join in but plenty of encouragement if you want to try something new or make a friend. Living here means having a mix of independence, comfort, and support, with both quiet time in your own place and a lot of community around you if you want it.
