    Clean caring facility; excellent rehab

I'm very pleased with this clean, well-run facility - professional, affectionate staff who greet residents by name, top-notch aides and rehab that helped my aunt fully recover, great meals, sunny private rooms and engaging activities; communication is strong and the team is very responsive, so I would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews for Kentmere Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center are strongly polarized, with families describing both clear strengths and serious operational weaknesses. Many reviewers praised the facility's rehabilitative services, noting effective physical and occupational therapy that supported functional recovery. CNAs and some nursing staff are frequently described as compassionate, attentive, and personable; several accounts highlight warm interactions, staff who greet residents by name, and meaningful memory-care activities such as music, games, and art. The physical environment is often described positively as well — bright, sunny private rooms, accessible common areas and gardens, and a central location within walking distance of restaurants and cultural venues.

At the same time, a substantial set of concerns recurs across reviews and points to facility-level operational gaps. Staffing inconsistency and short coverage were commonly cited, with families describing delays in responding to resident needs and situations where nurses took on CNA duties. These staffing problems appear linked to lapses in clinical oversight for higher-acuity needs: reviewers raised concerns about wound and pressure-area management, limited mobility leading to inactivity-related complications, and instances of delayed or inconsistent medication administration. Fall-prevention and resident-monitoring practices were another area of concern, including wandering in the memory-care unit and questions about alarm/monitoring use and response times.

Dining and housekeeping impressions are mixed. Several families praised the food and daily room cleaning, while others described problems accommodating special diets and episodes of meal-service inconsistency. Cleanliness and maintenance were reported as variable by reviewers: some floors were described as very clean and well-run, whereas other accounts noted sanitation issues and pest-control concerns. This pattern contributes to an overall perception of high variability in care and environment between different units and shifts.

Management and communication also received mixed feedback. Some reviewers commended the admissions staff and noted recent improvements under new leadership, but others experienced dismissive responses from nursing leadership and difficulty obtaining timely information about clinical incidents. These communication gaps, combined with staffing variability, contribute to family frustration and uneven trust in the facility's operational transparency.

Notable patterns: the facility appears capable of providing high-quality rehabilitative care and warm, engaging daily programming when staffing and clinical oversight are consistent. Conversely, when coverage is thin or leadership follow-up is lacking, families report measurable declines in resident support, clinical management, and environmental maintenance. Prospective residents and families would benefit from an in-person assessment focused on current staffing ratios, wound-care and fall-prevention protocols, dietary accommodation processes, pest-control and housekeeping schedules, medication administration procedures, and how the unit they are considering compares with other floors. Observing staff–resident interactions during a visit and asking for recent quality or inspection records may help clarify whether strengths are consistent across the parts of the facility under consideration.

About Kentmere Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center

Kentmere Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center sits in the 40 Acres neighborhood of Wilmington, Delaware, and it's been around since 1901 as a nonprofit, so the focus has always been helping people and providing care with as much dignity and compassion as they can manage, and over time, they've put together a team of professionals who try to come up with individualized plans to help each resident be as independent as possible, which can mean different things depending if someone's there for short-term rehabilitation, skilled nursing, long-term living, or if they're dealing with memory care issues like Alzheimer's or dementia. The place has 106 beds and during 2024, they managed to serve 213 residents in total, and the staff-who work Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.-spend their days providing physical, emotional, and spiritual care alongside regular medical services, counseling, and support for chronic illnesses. The rooms are mostly private and already furnished, with touches like warm decor and flat-screen TVs, and there are spaces like a big great room with a 60-inch TV, a solarium, a screened porch, and a courtyard where folks can sit at cafe tables; dining happens in a room with big windows and restaurant-style service, and there's always a variety of activities like art classes, happy hours, movie nights, a Veteran's Club, and outings, plus religious services for those who want to attend. The therapy gym spans 2,800 square feet with all sorts of equipment for working on balance, strength, or mobility, and partners like HealthPro Heritage and Skilled Wound Care help provide services beyond what the staff does directly. Other amenities include a beauty salon and barbershop, a gift shop, transportation to appointments, housekeeping, laundry, nutrition counseling, and even a games room. Employment here comes with competitive pay, a 401k that matches, health, dental, and vision benefits, and a real effort to give everyone a fair shot at jobs and promotions. The center is run by a board of trustees and officers who try to keep the place focused on serving older adults well, and people can find resources like residents' rights on the website, making sure there's always a way to speak up or learn more about what's available and how the center tries to support each person's whole well-being-body, mind, and spirit.
