    About Hale House

Hale House sits at 273 Clarendon St. in Boston, in a row of five 1860s brownstone townhouses with bay windows and original features still left inside, and the building holds a long history, including once being home to Henry Adams, while it's named after Edward Everett Hale. The place is run by the nonprofit Hale Barnard Corporation and has room for up to 56 elderly men and women, providing both independent, assisted living, and licensed nursing care, including for those with chronic or serious illnesses, and they don't turn anyone away for an inability to pay, serving a diverse community in Boston. Each resident gets a fully furnished private bedroom, often with a burgundy quilt, wooden dresser, and sunlight, and there are common lounges, a living room, and dining rooms lit by big windows and filled with wooden furniture, grand pianos, and ornate decorations. Residents eat three daily meals made and served onsite, and there's always hot coffee, while a microwave's available in one of the common rooms for those who prefer their own schedule.

The staff provides help with daily tasks, including housekeeping, laundry, meals, and 24-hour nursing onsite every day of the year, which means medical needs get managed whether day or night, and many residents find the setting more homelike than institutional. There's a strong focus on keeping everyone active and connected through a busy calendar packed with exercise classes like yoga or mobility sessions, community meals, art and music, social gatherings, hobbies, and excursions into Boston or walks through Commons and Public Gardens, especially as the seasons change along the garden path or out on the quiet patio, which has string lights and raised garden beds for those who like to get their hands in the dirt. Folks can take part in spiritual activities either onsite or offsite, partly because Hale House keeps ties with Boston's First and Second Church out of respect for its founders, although it remains non-sectarian in welcome and practice.

Many amenities are set up to make life simpler and safer, such as an elevator, spotless and well-lit interiors, fully accessible common areas, and specialized housing that lets older adults keep as much independence as they're able, while still having support close by. Residents can bring their own things to decorate their suites if they want, and there's full social support, translators, a budget management program, and transport or outings as needs arise. The staff aims to give personal attention and treat everyone with care, no matter their health issues or background. Hale House doesn't try to be fancy, but it's a community that mixes independence, social life, solid medical attention, good food, and a peaceful historic setting for people who can no longer stay in their own home but want life to keep feeling familiar, supportive, and alive with options.
