    Compassionate clean welcoming nursing facility

I moved my dad here and I'm very pleased. The long-tenured, compassionate staff (CNAs, nurses and doctors) provide attentive, high-quality care in a clean, peaceful, home-like facility with ample parking, an on-site Catholic church, daily activities and live music - my daughter and I feel welcomed and would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Penacook Place elicits strongly mixed impressions. Many accounts emphasize a core strength: direct-care staff who are compassionate, attentive, and often go beyond expectations to comfort residents and support families. Night-shift nursing and many CNAs receive frequent praise for their hands-on care, and several families highlight successful short-term rehabilitations and supportive hospice services. The activities program is an oft-cited positive, with regular offerings such as live music, bingo, church services and other social events that contribute to a positive atmosphere for residents.

Despite these strengths, there are consistent operational concerns that recur across reviews. Staffing levels and consistency are a central issue: understaffing and staffing changes are associated with longer wait times for assistance, delayed personal-care tasks, and variability in the quality of daily care. Reviewers describe gaps in clinical follow-through (for example, inconsistent execution of medical orders and hesitancy to escalate to physicians), which, combined with staffing shortages, raises questions about care reliability—particularly for residents with higher medical needs.

Dining and food services draw mixed feedback. Some families praise the meals and hospitality, while others describe inconsistent food temperature, portioning, and selection. There are also sanitation concerns associated with kitchen operations and intermittent service interruptions, which contribute to perceptions of unreliable meal service. Laundry and property management processes are another weakness: misdirected clothing items and occasional lapses in resident wardrobe management have been noted.

Facility condition and amenities reports are variable. Several reviewers describe clean, modern common spaces and home-like rooms; others cite maintenance and cleanliness lapses, pest-control concerns in particular units, and odour concerns in shared areas. Practical issues such as small room footprints, lack of visitor chairs in some rooms, non-functioning televisions or phone limitations, and occasional parking constraints were also mentioned. Safety and housekeeping practices have room for improvement in the view of some families (for example, loose papers creating slip risks).

Management and communication present a mixed picture. Positive comments reference a caring administrator and staff who remember and welcome visitors. Conversely, other accounts describe poor management responsiveness, communication gaps with families, leadership changes that coincide with service declines, and rate increases alongside staffing reductions. A recurring pattern is that resident experience appears to vary by unit and by who is on duty: families who are able to advocate, visit regularly, and coordinate with staff tend to report better outcomes, while less-advocating residents may experience longer delays and inconsistent service.

In sum, Penacook Place offers notable strengths in direct caregiving, activities, and short-term rehab, but prospective residents and families should be aware of operational variability. Key due-diligence items include clarifying current staffing levels and ratios, observing mealtime service, asking about kitchen sanitation and pest-control measures, reviewing laundry and property procedures, and discussing clinical oversight for higher-acuity needs. These steps can help align expectations with the facility's areas of strength and its operational challenges.

    About Penacook Place

Penacook Place Nursing & Rehab Center sits in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and has 160 beds for people who need round-the-clock care, and you'll find it as part of the Covenant Health system, which is a Catholic group with a long history of serving others, and you'll see them working with dignity and respect for every resident. Folks come here for different reasons, whether it's short-term rehab stays, long-term nursing care, or just a need for memory care, especially for those living with Alzheimer's disease, and they do provide palliative and respite care if someone needs comfort or just temporary support. Residents have help with things like bathing, dressing, and medication, and the staff, including a long-serving licensed practical nurse named Snow Bote, looks out for everyone's well-being, day and night, and they've trained their teams to manage wound care, fall prevention, end-of-life care, sepsis smart programs, and mental health support for depression and anxiety. You'll notice a busy calendar with events, outings, music, dances, even exhibitions, plus support groups and community projects like backpack drives or making lunches for those in need, so there's always something keeping people busy if they want it. Nutrition counseling and psychiatric counseling are available so residents can get support for their bodies and minds, and there are common areas and activity rooms for socializing and recreation. You won't find fancy names for programs, but care plans get personalized for each resident, making sure their needs and wishes matter. Penacook Place is close to other Covenant Health centers across New England, working together to improve how seniors live while keeping care simple, gentle, and trusting-just as you'd want for any loved one.
