    Engaging activities, caring staff, all-inclusive

I moved my mom to The Harbors and I'm very pleased - the activities director keeps residents engaged with live music, outings, themed events and crafts, and the chef serves fabulous, homemade meals. Staff and management are warm, responsive and genuinely caring, rooms and grounds are clean and comfortable, and the all-inclusive pricing made our decision easy.

    Summary of reviews

The Harbors Senior Living of Fridley elicits strongly polarized impressions. Many families and residents describe a warm, family-like atmosphere supported by compassionate aides, skilled nurses, a visible director of nursing, and an activities team that provides frequent, creative programming. Positive accounts emphasize home-style, flavorful meals, themed dinners, engaging live music and outings, well-kept newer building areas and courtyards, and individualized memory-care transitions. Administrators and some clinical leaders are frequently cited as accessible and communicative; these strengths contribute to a sense of comfort and social engagement for a substantial number of residents.

At the same time, a recurring set of operational weaknesses appears across reviews. Staffing instability and high caregiver turnover are common themes and are linked to variable day-to-day care consistency. Reviewers describe gaps in medication administration and documentation, intermittent delays in attending to personal-care needs (including inconsistent bathing schedules and incontinence-care delays), and instances of missed or delayed lift assistance. Sanitation and odor concerns, inconsistent housekeeping and laundry follow-through, and some maintenance shortfalls (leaky showers, broken fixtures, elevator and ramp problems) are reported, indicating uneven facility upkeep across units and shifts.

Dining and activities are major drivers of satisfaction but also show variability. Numerous families praise the food, noting fresh, flavorful meals that aid weight maintenance; others describe cold or institutional meal experiences and difficulties obtaining meal assistance for residents who need it. The activities department is widely regarded as a strength, with an active director creating a broad calendar of events, though some residents—particularly those outside memory-care programming—are described as less engaged, suggesting uneven reach of activities to all care levels.

Management performance is mixed. Several accounts commend responsive executive and nursing leadership that addresses concerns directly and facilitates smooth move-ins; contrasting accounts describe difficulty contacting leadership, slow follow-up, monitored family communications, and uneven resolution of clinical or maintenance issues. There are also serious allegations regarding billing and financial handling that prospective families should take note of. Overall, the pattern suggests that experience at the Harbors is highly dependent on unit assignment, staffing on particular shifts, and recent leadership changes that have sometimes improved conditions.

For prospective residents and families: the community offers clear strengths in social programming, dining, and a warm atmosphere when staffing and leadership are stable. Before committing, consider asking specific questions about current staffing levels and turnover, medication-administration protocols and documentation, housekeeping and maintenance schedules, transportation reliability, and billing practices. Visiting at different times of day, meeting the nursing leadership, and confirming written policies on clinical oversight and financial charges can help clarify whether the current operational realities align with your expectations.
