    Moved mom; pleased with Montclair

I moved my mom into The Montclair and am very pleased - the community is beautiful, clean and newly renovated, the staff (Amanda, Jeff and their team) were warm, attentive and genuinely caring, and residents stay active with plenty of programs. Dining, roomy apartments and responsive management give me real peace of mind; I'd recommend this as a very good place for a loved one.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: The Montclair Senior Living is described predominantly as an amenity-rich independent living community with a strong social focus and a generally high level of day-to-day resident support. Many comments highlight a hotel-like aesthetic after recent renovations, spacious apartments with generous storage, and a bright central atrium that functions as the community hub. The environment is frequently characterized as welcoming and social, with numerous resident-led activities and robust opportunities for engagement.

Care and staff: Reviewers consistently praise the quality and character of frontline staff and nursing personnel. Staff are described as personable, attentive, and responsive, with many families noting smooth transitions, individualized onboarding, prompt responses to medical needs, and 24/7 availability for urgent concerns. At the same time, there are recurring remarks about uneven staff consistency tied to leadership changes and occasional lapses in communication and conduct; prospective families should assess current leadership stability and staff continuity during a tour.

Dining and food safety: Dining is a prominent feature of the community and elicits polarized impressions. Several accounts describe restaurant-style service, extensive menus, and flavorful entrees served by courteous wait staff. Parallel to that, there are facility-level concerns about inconsistent meal timing, order accuracy, and food-safety processes — including hand-hygiene and cart-sanitation practices — as well as occasional cafeteria staffing shortfalls. Reviewers also noted disruptions to meal service during kitchen management turnover or staffing shortages. Prospective residents for whom consistent meal delivery or strict food-safety controls are critical should verify current dining operations and infection-control protocols.

Activities and amenities: The Montclair offers a wide array of programming across social, cultural, and fitness domains: live music, choir and band events, clubs (bridge, book, bingo), exercise classes, outings to local shopping and entertainment, and on-site services such as a beauty salon and library. Transportation services and accessible outdoor spaces with walking trails and seating support an active lifestyle. This breadth of programming is one of the facility's strongest and most consistently praised features.

Facility condition and maintenance: Many reviewers commend recent remodels, tasteful common areas, and well-kept grounds. At the same time, ongoing renovation activity has introduced intermittent disruption and concern for some residents. Maintenance responsiveness appears mixed: some families praise rapid apartment readiness and courteous maintenance staff, while others report delays on repairs and temporary issues (for example, wet-carpet repairs near elevators). Confirm the current status of remodeling and typical response times for resident maintenance requests when evaluating the community.

Management, fees, and availability: Commentary on management is generally positive about individual leaders and caregiving teams, though a number of remarks point to leadership turnover that has affected operational consistency. Financially, the facility offers competitive pricing options and veteran discounts, but reviewers raise concerns about the structure of entrance or buy-in fees and limited refundability. Availability constraints were also noted for certain unit types (studios, ground-floor apartments). Prospective residents should request clear, written explanations of fees, refund policies, and availability of preferred floor plans.

Notable patterns and decision guidance: Strengths center on an active, social independent-living environment staffed by committed caregivers and augmented by extensive amenities. Key risks to evaluate in person relate to dining continuity and food-safety processes, current staffing levels in the cafeteria and care teams, the impact of continuing renovations, and the community's capacity to meet higher-level care needs should they arise. For seniors seeking a socially active, well‑appointed independent-living community with strong day‑to‑day support, The Montclair appears well suited; for those requiring guaranteed on-site assisted-care services or who prioritize flawless dining operations, clarifying the facility's scope of care and current operational controls is recommended.

    About The Montclair Senior Living

The Montclair Senior Living sits in a quiet part of Springfield, with lots of trees and clean, landscaped grounds, and you'll find it's more about giving older adults a safe place where people can feel at home, and they do this by having both independent living and several levels of care, like assisted living, memory care for those who need Alzheimer's Care, even skilled nursing and home care, so people with different needs can all get the help they need. The building's designed for comfort, and there are studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, some in different sizes, and right now you can get a studio that's 448 square feet or a one-bedroom that's either 667 or 858 square feet with one bathroom, and these units have features made for seniors, though there aren't details about the specific amenities in each. People who move into The Montclair get a maintenance-free life, and they don't have to worry about upkeep or repairs, and if you like having space, some units let you have a pet, so you can bring a little friend along, though you'd need to ask which pets are allowed.

You'll find a big, open atrium in the community, with a track for walking and open areas for people to meet up, and there's a piano in the sitting room, a stocked library, a game room, a gym or fitness center, and even a small theater, which gives folks plenty to do when staying inside, and the place is spread out so residents can gather on different floors for activities. They set up a good number of daily events, outings, and programs to keep people active and with chances to see friends, learn something new, or enjoy movies or music, and the staff runs scheduled rides for shopping trips, medical appointments, or going out to things happening around town. Meal plans focus on healthy food, and there's always a chance to eat with others in shared dining spaces.

For folks with Alzheimer's or dementia, The Montclair has a special area with extra safety and staff who know how to help, and care plans get changed as needed so everyone gets the attention or support they need, whether that's simple help with daily tasks or more hands-on medical care in the nursing part of the place. Staff stick around to help, and they're always close by if anyone needs something, making it a bit easier for residents to stay as independent as possible. The community is managed in part by Dial Senior Living for some units, who have experience handling communities like this. The Montclair tries new programs and changes their lifestyle activities so living there can stay interesting and support residents' well-being, and even though it doesn't try to be fancy, it does have everything older folks might need if they don't want to live alone but still want some freedom and a full life with some privacy.
