    Caring staff, clean facility, welcoming

I'm very pleased with Laurelwood - the staff is genuinely caring, helpful, and responsive to our family. The facility is clean and well-kept, rooms are private with walk-in showers and space for personal furniture, dining is excellent, and there are lots of activities and amenities (salon, courtyard, outings). Admissions were thorough and helped coordinate benefits; it feels safe, welcoming, and a good value - I'd recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Laurelwood Assisted Living presents a mixed but largely positive profile. Strengths most consistently noted include a robust dining program (often described as chef-driven with many choices), an active calendar of social and therapeutic activities (live music, outings, arts and crafts, exercise sessions), and a generally warm, social community atmosphere. The facility accepts Medicaid waivers and is frequently characterized as competitively priced. Many families highlighted accessible amenities such as salon services, on-site therapy, transportation for medical appointments, and secure outdoor spaces for residents.

Care and staffing are areas of both praise and concern. Numerous comments commend caring, compassionate aides and nurses who assist with daily tasks, mobility support, and medication management; an RN presence and therapy services are also cited positively. At the same time, reviewers describe recurring operational weaknesses: inconsistent staffing levels (notably on weekends and at night), turnover that can interrupt continuity of care, and isolated but consequential lapses in medication administration and clinical follow-through. Prospective families should clarify current staffing patterns, RN coverage, and medication-administration protocols during a visit.

Dining and programming are clear highlights for many residents. The community offers frequent, varied activities — group outings, religious services, music performances, and exercise options — that support engagement and socialization. While food quality is often praised, other families described variability in meal preparation, portioning, and menu suitability for some dietary needs; some reviewers also mentioned instances when kitchen supply or meal delivery did not meet expectations. Asking for a sample menu and observing a mealtime can help set expectations.

Facilities and accommodations are generally described as clean and well maintained, with private rooms that include in-room bathrooms, grab bars, and options to use personal furniture. There are also larger suite options with kitchenettes in parts of the building. At the same time, the physical plant is older in places: several reviewers noted small room sizes, limited built-in storage or closet space, dated décor in areas, and periodic parking-lot or exterior maintenance needs. Maintenance responsiveness for repairs was cited as a positive in many accounts.

Management and operational processes show variability. Positive experiences cite transparent tours and helpful admissions staff; negative accounts emphasize admissions follow-through problems, delayed responses after application, and leadership turnover that affected communication and complaint resolution. There are also recurring notes about move-in logistics (room preparation delays) and policy-driven transfers after hospitalization that can be disruptive. Families should request clear documentation of policies on hospital transfers, level-of-care changes, and extra fees, and confirm expectations in writing.

Overall impression: Laurelwood offers strong social programming, good dining for many residents, and a caring frontline staff, making it a viable option for seniors seeking an engaged assisted-living environment with Medicaid acceptance. However, the facility exhibits operational patterns that some families find problematic — chiefly staffing variability, episodic clinical/medication continuity issues, and inconsistent management communication. A focused tour that observes mealtime, staffing at different shifts, the memory-care unit, and a detailed review of contracts and clinical policies will help families determine fit and mitigate known concerns.

    About Laurelwood Assisted Living, LLC

Laurelwood Assisted Living, LLC, in Dayton, sits close to Dayton Mall and Cox Arboretum so folks who live there can enjoy shopping, dining, and seasonal gardens nearby, and the community itself has a peaceful property and a familial, welcoming atmosphere. The building has three stories with both assisted living and a specialized memory care neighborhood for people with Alzheimer's or other forms of memory loss, and they set up both private and companion apartments with private bathrooms, cable, emergency call systems, and individually controlled heating and air. Residents can bring their cats or dogs if they want, and the place has enclosed courtyards, walking paths, and a gazebo for getting outside, as well as indoor lounges, exercise classes, and a beauty salon. There's always a team on site, with licensed nurses managing health care, full-time activity directors making daily schedules, and around-the-clock staff for help and security, and they all focus on personalized and dignified support, including medication help, medical appointment scheduling, and help with bathing and dressing.

Meals are home-cooked by the executive chef and team, with three nutritious meals and snacks every day, plus guest meals and catering services for special events if families or friends come to visit. There's a reserved private dining room for small gatherings, and folks can invite their own guests with a reservation. Activities include trips and outings, devotionals, exercise, group events, and special parties to encourage people to stay active and engaged. The memory care area is safe and secure, specially designed with routines and structure for people who need extra support, and there's a director of memory care and a team focused on person-centered attention, including custom care plans, therapies, field trips, and a controlled-access building with safety checks, secure doors, and 24/7 emergency systems.

Housekeeping, laundry, scheduled rides, and all utilities except phone are part of the lease, and the management team-maintenance, business office, nursing, admissions, and staffing-help things run smoothly day by day. The amenities also include a residents' lounge, recreation areas, fitness space, elevators, religious services, controlled access, pet accommodations, and plenty of indoor and outdoor common areas for socializing or quiet time, and the staff always aims for a positive, supportive environment where people feel at home and their care matches their medical and personal needs. Laurelwood Assisted Living, LLC is open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 to 17:00, and more information can be found at laurelwoodassistedliving.com.
