    Exceptional compassionate attentive rehab staff

I stayed here for rehab and was very pleased-beautiful, spotless facility with spacious private rooms and a welcoming atmosphere. The nurses, aides and social services were compassionate and attentive, and the PT/OT team was exceptional-I left walker-free. Meals, activities and housekeeping were all excellent, and staff consistently went above and beyond. I would recommend this facility for rehab or long-term care.

    Summary of reviews

The body of reviews for Shawneespring Skilled Nursing Facility presents a mixed picture: the facility’s rehabilitation services receive consistently strong praise, while other operational areas show recurring variability. Many families and residents commend the therapy teams (PT/OT/ST), social services, and several direct-care staff members for producing measurable functional gains, clear discharge planning, and supportive bedside care. Several reviews highlight bright, remodeled rooms and private-room options that aid rehabilitation and family visits.

Clinical care quality is uneven. The therapy department is a clear strength and frequently credited with rapid recovery progress and effective discharge preparation. Nursing and aide performance ranges from highly compassionate and attentive to insufficiently responsive; numerous accounts describe delayed medication delivery, missed or late medications, and concerns about the timing and appropriateness of sedating agents in some cases. Call-light response times and bedside assistance are recurring weaknesses, with many families describing extended waits for help with toileting, transfers, and personal care. Fall-prevention and transfer-safety practices also appear inconsistent across shifts.

Personal care, hygiene assistance, and sanitation are areas of concern. Reviews describe irregular bathing schedules, delays in managing continence needs, and variable cleanliness in rooms and common areas. While housekeeping staff and some rooms are praised, sanitation inconsistencies and odor concerns in certain units were reported. Maintenance issues — including inoperative showers, malfunctioning beds, and room fixture problems — further contribute to an uneven care environment.

Dining and activities receive mixed feedback. Several residents enjoyed the food and appreciated variety and portioning, while others encountered cold trays, meal-delivery delays, and insufficient accommodation for renal or diabetic dietary restrictions. On-site activities such as bingo, crafts, and music were available and valued by some families, but the overall activity schedule and off-site outings were described as limited, particularly as post-pandemic programming resumed.

Communication, management, and logistics show important gaps. Families describe inconsistent family communication, limited discharge assistance in practice, and challenges accessing records or transparent billing. Transportation coordination for off-site treatments (for example, dialysis) was cited as unreliable by some families, and there were instances of belongings mishandling during moves. A small number of reviews referenced regulatory scrutiny and alleged nonstandard medication practices; such serious concerns underscore the need for prospective families to review clinical and compliance information directly with the facility.

Notable patterns: the therapy/recovery program and certain front-line caregivers are reliably praised and represent the facility’s core strength. Counterbalancing that are systematic operational weaknesses: staffing variability, slow response to call lights, medication-administration inconsistencies, sanitation and maintenance lapses, and uneven family communication and discharge coordination. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility’s strong rehabilitative resources and some consistently compassionate staff against these recurring operational issues. If considering Shawneespring, request up-to-date information on staffing ratios, medication-safety practices, sanitation protocols, special-diet handling, transportation processes, and current regulatory status, and arrange an in-person visit focused on the units under consideration.

    About Shawneespring Skilled Nursing Facility

Shawneespring Skilled Nursing Facility sits in Harrison, Ohio, and provides care for seniors who need skilled nursing, intermediate care, and rehabilitation, so you'll see people there for both short-term rehab after a hospital stay and long-term nursing care, and with 140 certified beds holding about 122 people most days, there's usually room for new faces but it still feels busy. The building's part of the Carespring network, and Carespring Health Care Holdings LP owns it fully, with folks like Barry N Bortz Trust and David Eppers holding a majority of indirect stakes, and Carespring Health Care Management, LLC managing things since 2007, so there's a thread of familiarity with how the place runs. They've got a 3-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, an average rating from users at 5.1 out of 10, but, for the city, it's actually the 2nd highest rated-a bit above average, though not without its issues. The most recent state complaint in November 2023 found one deficiency, and there've been 14 health deficiencies in past inspections, some connected to infection control and urinary care, and while they have infection control protocols in place, there've been problems flagged with caring for people who are incontinent or have urinary needs, which includes infection prevention, so that's something families sometimes watch.

The nurses average about 3.61 hours per resident per day, but there's a nurse turnover rate of about 52.9%, which is a little above the state average, so staff might come and go more than you'd expect. Even so, residents have access to a variety of services such as skilled nursing, rehabilitation, memory care, respite care, palliative care, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as nutritional counseling, and accommodations come in a choice of studio layouts. They focus on quality of life, aiming to give residents a welcoming environment with both personal attention and a sense of community, and the place is recognized for good group care for rehab and post-injury recovery, although it's not accredited by the BBB. Many see the staff as kind and helpful, and you'll find a dedicated team there, offering personalized support whether someone needs bladder care, catheter care, or just some help recovering from surgery. The facility also works with A Place For Mom to help families find care options, and an 8.0 review score from families suggests that people are generally satisfied, though there will be complaints here and there. Shawneespring tries to meet a broad range of needs with professional and compassionate care, focusing on comfort, safety, and a respectful environment, with a main goal to support health and independence as much as possible.
