    Resort-like community with excellent staff

I toured Shannondell and was very impressed - the grounds and interiors are beautiful and resort-like, and the professional theater put on a fantastic big-band concert that was even videotaped and shared. Staff from reception to nursing were welcoming and helpful, the food and dining options were excellent, and the calendar is packed with activities, wellness programs and on-site medical services. Clean, secure, and well-managed, I'm seriously considering it as a retirement option.

    Summary of reviews

Shannondell presents as a large, resort-style continuing care community with extensive amenities and a highly active social program. The campus, grounds and common areas are repeatedly described as attractive, well maintained and hotel-like. Residents and visitors commonly praise multiple dining venues, a robust calendar of arts and recreation (theater, concerts, clubs, water aerobics, woodworking, and specialty groups), indoor pool and fitness centers, shuttle services, and spacious apartment layouts that include kitchens and in-unit laundry. Housekeeping and maintenance support, on-site medical offices, and security features contribute to a sense of convenience and safety for many residents.

Dining and activities are among the facility’s standout features: there are several restaurants and dining formats, dietitian oversight, complimentary visitor meals, and a large slate of lectures, performances and outings that support an engaged resident lifestyle. Many accounts characterize the food as excellent, attractively presented and varied; others note intermittent declines in temperature control or portioning and a tendency toward heavier sauces or takeout packaging. Prospective residents should verify current menus, meal-temperature practices, and plan options during touring.

Care and clinical services elicit mixed feedback. Numerous families and residents commend CNAs, nurses and on-site clinicians for attentive, compassionate care and effective therapy teams. Conversely, there are recurring operational concerns: variability in clinical-care consistency between units, uneven rehabilitation intensity and weekend therapy availability, medication and pain-management delays in isolated cases, and instances of rushed or poorly coordinated discharge planning. Staffing levels and turnover are frequently cited as contributors to delayed responses for assistance and occasional shortfalls in timely care. These patterns suggest that clinical experience can differ substantially depending on unit, shift and timing; families should ask for current staffing ratios, therapy schedules, and discharge protocols when evaluating placement.

Operational and management themes are similarly mixed. Many reviewers describe professional, welcoming staff and proactive wellness nurses; others describe lapses in communication, package handling, privacy controls, and occasional discourteous interactions with individual employees. Concerns about additional fees, periodic price increases, and variable transparency around extra charges are noted, which may affect budgeting despite flat-fee models for some services. There are also logistical constraints such as limited visitor parking at peak times. Given the range of experiences, prospective residents and families should obtain written details on fee structures, grievance and feedback processes, privacy and security measures, and family-notification procedures.

Overall, Shannondell is characterized by high-quality facilities, abundant programming, and strong resort-like amenities that many residents find desirable. At the same time, there is a clear signal that clinical care, rehabilitation outcomes, staffing stability, and certain operational practices can be inconsistent. Those considering Shannondell would be well served by focused questions during tours about current staffing levels, therapy availability (including weekend coverage), clinical protocols for medication and pain management, cleaning and infection-control standards, and a transparent breakdown of fees and expected out-of-pocket costs. A targeted review of the specific care unit under consideration (independent living vs assisted living vs skilled nursing/rehab) and conversations with current residents and families can help clarify whether the community’s strengths align with an individual’s care needs and expectations.

    About Shannondell

Shannondell in Audubon, PA, sits on about 140 acres in the Delaware Valley, and you'll find it at 10000 Shannondell Drive. The community offers independent living, personal care, assisted living, skilled nursing, and rehab all in one place, which is handy for folks who want different options as their needs change. The healthcare side works with Main Line Health and Main Line Healthcare Adult Medicine, which means residents can get a range of services like primary care, women's health, heart and vascular care, cancer treatment, orthopaedics, mental and behavioral health, rehab, and neurology. There's a team always on hand to help with things like scheduling appointments, checking out care options, and helping in different languages if needed, which can bring peace of mind especially when health becomes more complicated.

The residential part has a mix of homes, with new additions like Lenbrook House, and it connects to the Ashcroft Clubhouse, which is the social spot with a convenience store, hair salon, library, pharmacy, bank with a 24-hour ATM, and rooms for games, crafts, woodworking, and computers. There's also a 110,000-square-foot, three-level center for dining and activities, which they designed to feel like an elegant resort or spa, so folks have places to gather and stay active. Recreational and wellness activities fill up the calendar, and there's even a golf course and a swim complex just down the road. The community has clubhouses, outdoor gallery spaces, and landscaped grounds, plus security's on duty all day and night.

Shannondell also covers regular needs in the monthly fee, so housekeeping, all utilities, groundskeeping, snow removal, scheduled rides, and maintenance are all taken care of. There's a personal care facility run by doctors and rehab services for those who need more help day-to-day, and a physical therapy team plans care to encourage healing and recovery for each person. Memory care, case management, and skilled nursing are close by, right by The Meadows and only a short walk from the independent living houses.

Residents get access to a store with free WiFi at the main address, and the store divides into areas for fresh produce, meat, dairy, eggs, deli and prepared food, beverages, snacks, and frozen foods, with delivery and pickup available along with a rewards program called GIANT Choice Rewards®. There's a pharmacy on-site with set hours. Other things like housekeeping, transportation, and activities are included, so daily worries are fewer. There's a wellness and lifestyle magazine named "Living More Inspired," and folks can check out the resident video gallery or request brochures, join guest events, or set up a private tour if they want to learn more. For those who want to volunteer, there's a program within the community, though there have been concerns raised about the activities there. Shannondell's website, shannondell.com, gives more details, and there are ways to see floor plans, photos, activity schedules, FAQs, and options for both medical providers and patients. The community holds onto its focus on compassionate care and active, independent living, with amenities and a layout that are meant to support well-being and give folks choices as their needs and interests change.
