    Caring staff, engaging village community

I'm very happy with my mom's care here. The staff and volunteers are caring and attentive - special thanks to Jen and Nicki - and communication is reliable, which gives our family real peace of mind. The village-like campus is beautiful and dog-friendly, with dedicated activity rooms and lots of programs (crafts, trivia, baking, movies, church), a beauty shop and bank visits that keep residents engaged. Clean, friendly, reasonably priced - after two years as a resident we have no regrets.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: The Village at Shrewsbury presents as a campus with many of the features families look for in a continuing-care community: a village-style layout with cottage options, well-kept grounds, dedicated activity spaces, and visible life-enrichment efforts. Multiple comments emphasize compassionate caregiving, reliable family communication, and a low-pressure admissions experience. Volunteers and family inclusion are highlighted as contributors to resident quality of life, and on-site amenities such as a salon and banking visits add convenience.

Care and staff: Many families describe attentive, compassionate staff who know residents and provide peace of mind. Life-enrichment personnel receive specific praise for programming and responsiveness. At the same time, reviewers indicate variability in staff performance and conduct; some staff are described as exceptionally caring while others are perceived as less engaged or poorly informed. There are also operational concerns tied to mobility assistance — for example, instances that suggest inconsistent repositioning or wheelchair-time management — and a single, serious allegation regarding pain-medication withholding that underscores the importance of confirming medication-management protocols and escalation procedures with the facility.

Dining, activities, and facilities: Activity offerings are a consistent strength, with crafts, trivia, baking, movies, church services, and frequent social programming mentioned. Dedicated spaces for activities and gatherings support an active schedule. Dining experiences appear mixed: some reviews praise meals and value, while others note interruptions to dining-room service, temporary closures, and meal delivery to rooms. Apartment size and layout are a recurring operational note — units are described as roomy by some and small by others — so prospective residents should verify unit dimensions and floor plans. Grounds and common areas are described as pleasant, with landscaping and flowers contributing to a homelike feel.

Management and operational patterns: Several reviewers raise concerns about administrative style and hospitality consistency, characterizing leadership as tightly controlling in ways that affect staff autonomy and responsiveness. Communication with families is generally cited as reliable when staff are engaged, but there is noted variability in customer-service responsiveness across shifts. Cost perceptions vary; some describe the pricing as reasonable while others view it as expensive relative to expectations. Finally, pet policies appear inconsistent in practice — some comments describe dog-friendly spaces while others indicate restrictions — so clarify current pet rules and enforcement before committing. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong programming and caregiving reports against the operational variability described above and seek direct confirmation from the facility on clinical protocols, dining continuity, pet policy, and unit sizing.

About SpiriTrust Lutheran, the Village at Shrewsbury

SpiriTrust Lutheran, The Village at Shrewsbury sits on 45 acres of open countryside with a quiet, rural feel, just four miles from the Pennsylvania/Maryland border and close to I-83, so it's easy to find and get to with the help of a campus map they offer. The community's on a hill with good views of the countryside and rolling trees, and the place has a warm, home-like feeling, with residents and staff who seem to know each other like neighbors. People can tour the grounds, meet residents, and see for themselves how there's a small, close-knit feel, but activities always keep things lively.

There are all kinds of living options, from cottages and apartment-style homes with one- and two-bedroom floor plans, to personal care and memory support in Zimmerman Place, which aims to feel intimate and secure. Homes have slab construction, so floors tend to be cold, but maintenance stays up to date, and the inside of cottages can be made comfortable and feature people's own furniture and decorations. The campus is pet-friendly, with a policy of allowing pet visitation, and outdoor walking paths, patios, gardens, and shared spaces like the library and a fireplace make the place easy to enjoy.

Amenities make daily life more convenient, with a town library, YMCA, post office, pharmacy, grocery, and doctor's office all close by. On campus, people can use the activity center, café, cozy lounges, and enjoy chef-prepared meals in the dining room three times daily. There's a full-service salon with barber services and scheduled transportation for errands. Laundry and housekeeping get taken care of, with staff on hand to help with health needs, bathing, grooming, and medications.

A big part of the community's life is the Spirit360® wellness program, which offers classes, social groups, outings, lectures, celebrations, and creative arts, all with a focus on the seven parts of wellness-emotional, intellectual, physical, vocational, social, spiritual, and environmental-so older adults can feel involved and active. The life enrichment staff reach out regularly, and the Director of Senior Living Sales and Marketing is Jen Hartley, while Denise Sennett manages the Strasburg House, which is their low-income housing option here in Shrewsbury.

The Village at Shrewsbury provides all levels of care including independent living, personal care, assisted living, memory support, and short-term rehab nursing. There's a 70-bed assisted living area for residents needing help with daily living, a skilled nursing and rehab center for both short- and long-term care with professionals on staff around the clock, as well as respite and hospice care when needed. Respite stays can last up to 30 days, and each resident gets a personal care plan to help them live as independently as possible. Palliative care, home health, and in-home support services come from the broader SpiriTrust Lutheran network, which also stretches to Chambersburg, Gettysburg, Hanover, York, and offers programs like SpiriTransition and the Spirit360® Road to Home recovery stay option.

The community has a wide range of services, with clubs, community events, trips to attractions like the Shrewsbury Historic District, local farmers markets, and area cities such as Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The location's peaceful and feels safe, with residential living and personal care offered at the main address-800 Bollinger Drive, Shrewsbury, PA 17361. Cost varies with options for private pay, long-term care insurance, and Veterans Administration payments, and homes come at different price points for more flexibility.

With about 68 units, wheelchair-accessible features, and a licensed personal care home, The Village at Shrewsbury is part of SpiriTrust Lutheran's 70 years of senior service experience, focusing on compassionate care and a sense of security for the future. The range of activities, amenities, supportive services, and the tight-knit neighborhood setting encourage folks to remain as independent as possible, find new friends, and enjoy their retirement years while knowing there's support and healthcare on hand if needed.
