    Caring staff and excellent therapy

I'm very grateful for the genuinely caring staff here - nurses, CNAs, admin and social work were attentive and communicative, PT/OT gave tailored, engaging therapy, and meals were excellent and well presented. Rooms were immaculate, residents smiled and felt supported, renovations are underway, and special thanks to Tasha and Kimberly; I highly recommend this facility.

    Summary of reviews

Reviewer feedback for Avalon Healthcare - Tacoma is sharply divided and presents a pattern of strong direct caregiving contrasted with persistent operational weaknesses. Many narratives highlight individual staff members and teams—nurses, CNAs, therapists, and some administrators—as attentive, compassionate, and effective. Families and residents described personalized one-on-one care, responsive communication from certain administrators, robust physical and occupational therapy programs, and engaging activity offerings that contribute to resident well-being. Several accounts also note positive hospice support and planned or ongoing renovation efforts that have improved specific rooms or areas.

Conversely, a number of consistent operational concerns appear across reviews. Sanitation management and odor control are recurring themes, alongside delays in assistance for incontinence-care needs and inconsistent bathing schedules. Medication-administration delays and medication-management errors were described frequently enough to indicate gaps in medication-control processes and timeliness. Many reviewers described slow response times to call systems and what appear to be variable staffing levels; these staffing inconsistencies are linked in multiple accounts to missed care items and long waits for assistance.

Dining and nutrition feedback is mixed: some families praised meal presentation and alternatives, while others reported cold meals and insufficient dietary accommodations for conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Facility condition feedback is similarly mixed—some rooms and units were described as immaculate or recently renovated, while others were characterized by worn finishes, broken equipment, and maintenance issues. Pest-control and odor-management concerns, along with malfunctioning assistive devices and damaged environmental fixtures, were cited as safety and comfort issues.

Administrative and management patterns emerged as a separate area of concern. Reviewers described episodic leadership turnover, billing and insurance coordination problems, unclear clinical documentation or failure to follow physician orders, and at least one instance of program changes that disrupted scheduled care offerings. While some families praised communicative administrators, others found phone access, care coordination, and billing resolution to be inconsistent. These management and operational gaps appear to amplify the impact of staffing and maintenance deficiencies on daily resident experience.

Taken together, the feedback suggests Avalon Healthcare - Tacoma provides notable strengths in direct caregiving, therapy services, and certain aspects of resident engagement, but also exhibits systemic operational challenges that affect cleanliness, timeliness of care, medication processes, facility maintenance, and administrative consistency. Prospective residents and families would benefit from in-person visits focused on current staffing levels and response times, medication-administration procedures, sanitation practices, dietary accommodations, recent inspection or staffing changes, and the status and timeline for any ongoing renovations.
