    Rehab stay with excellent care

I stayed here for rehab and was very pleased - staff were friendly, professional and recovery-focused with strong nursing and smooth transitions between care levels. The facility is beautiful, bright and clean with easy parking, lovely gardens and plenty of activities; dining felt restaurant-quality (excellent steaks, pastries and wine) and a caring minister/educational programs added warmth. I highly recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge is described by reviewers as a high-amenity community with strengths in hospitality, dining, and clinical rehabilitation. The facility's common areas are bright and attractive, with outdoor gardens and ample parking; many residents and visitors remark on spacious apartments, screened balconies, and scenic views. Dining is a clear selling point: an on-site restaurant-style program, an in-house pastry operation and dedicated pastry chef, and menu items described as high-quality (steaks, seafood, desserts, and an extensive wine selection) contribute to an upscale resident experience.

Clinical and direct-care strengths are frequently cited. Reviewers describe strong, recovery-focused rehabilitation and skilled-nursing services, seamless transitions among levels of care, and weekday nursing and caregiving staff who are professional, compassionate, and well trained. The community also publishes an extensive activities calendar and offers frequent programming and educational presentations, which supports social engagement for many residents.

Notwithstanding these positives, several operational patterns raise concerns for prospective residents and families. Availability is limited: assisted-living openings can have long waitlists. Staffing models show variability—weekday staff are commonly praised while weekend coverage often relies on agency personnel, which reviewers associate with uneven care quality and compassion. Related to staffing are reports of inconsistent responsiveness and gaps in emergency-response reliability that warrant investigation prior to move-in.

Unit- and service-level tradeoffs are evident. Memory-care rooms are described as smaller in footprint compared with the rest of the community, and assisted-living apartments commonly do not include kitchenettes, which affects residents seeking more independent living accommodations. A subset of comments flagged odor concerns and other cleanliness or administrative follow-through issues in memory-care areas. Transportation for off-site appointments and activities is reported as limited, and some reviewers described variability in activity offerings despite the extensive calendar. Finally, cost and access are considerations: the community maintains relatively high ongoing fees and does not accept Medicaid, which may limit affordability for some families.

In summary, Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge presents a high-quality physical environment, upscale dining, and solid rehab and weekday clinical care, making it a strong option for families prioritizing those attributes. Prospective residents should balance those strengths against operational considerations—waitlist timelines, weekend staffing variability, certain memory-care unit limitations, transportation availability, emergency-response practices, and cost structure—by touring the specific neighborhood of interest, asking for documentation on staffing patterns and emergency systems, and confirming unit layouts and services that match the prospective resident's needs.

    About Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge

Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge sits on 18 acres at 5565 Tancho Drive in Madison, Wisconsin, and you'll find plenty of open views and garden spaces there, which can be nice for folks who like to be out in the fresh air, and there are raised garden beds, fire pits, and walking paths in the courtyards between the three five-story towers, all connected by second-floor indoor walkways so it's possible to get around in any weather. They've recently renovated and added more housing and amenities, offering 277 apartment homes, mostly focused on independent living, with units from 950 to 1,450 square feet, many with walk-in closets, private dens in some layouts, and sizeable screened-in balconies-actually, those screened-in balconies are a first for Prairie Ridge, and you get big windows for lots of light. The Grasslands community finished in July 2019 brought even more spacious apartments with new features, and each apartment has a full kitchen, washer and dryer, individually controlled heat and air, and storage areas, along with underground heated parking.

The Prairie Ridge campus tries to make things easy for residents. There's a Prairie Rose Restaurant with in-house cooking, a full-time pastry chef, and a menu that includes high-quality steaks, pork, chicken, and salmon, plus daily specials and an extensive wine selection, and a general grocery and gift shop for the basics. Health and wellness matter here, and you'll find fitness classes, a gym, studio, pools, and paths for keeping active, with specialized programs for fitness and activities, and staff providing health care services, rehabilitation therapies, and both assisted living and skilled nursing if more support is needed as needs change over time. Spiritual care, a library, computer lab, woodworking and craft rooms, art and culture activities, volunteering opportunities, and lifelong learning programs help build a sense of community, and there's always an activity calendar full of social clubs, games, culinary events, trips, current events talks, and game nights, with bus trips to get out around town.

Each of the two main buildings, Pioneer Prairie and Settlers Ridge, house over 200 apartments designed for independent living, and the entire place works as a Continuing Care Retirement Community-people can start with independent apartments and get more help if they need memory care, assisted living, or skilled nursing. The apartments have two bedrooms and two bathrooms in different styles, with security features like emergency pendants, and the building supports privacy with at most five units per floor. Extra services like laundry, housekeeping, beauty salon, pharmacy, concierge, and shuttle transportation are available, and WiFi is onsite, so you can stay connected as well as comfortable. There are both indoor and outdoor walkways, plenty of room for group dining or private parties, and supplemental storage space for each apartment. Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge works to support health, wellness, and community, aiming to keep residents active, engaged, and connected while providing the comforts and security people hope for as they age.
