Mary's Garden sat quietly in a St. Petersburg neighborhood, licensed by the Florida Department of Social Services for a small group of up to five residents, so you'd find it quite different from those big senior homes that can feel a bit too busy or crowded, and if you asked anyone at 6067 17th Avenue North, you'd hear stories about the Recine family and staff focusing on personal care, like homemade meals three times a day, staff always on hand for help with bathing, dressing, medication, and managing daily routines, and making sure people had both their privacy and the company of others in the indoor and outdoor common areas, where folks might join planned activities, enjoy movie nights, music, or just sit in a sunny spot with a book. Nurses and a doctor were on call, and you'd see help for all kinds of needs, from simple support with laundry or personal hygiene up to memory care for Alzheimer's and dementia, plus things like wound care, diabetes management, therapy for speech or movement, and help even for high acuity or non-ambulatory residents. Some residents stayed short-term for respite, while others called it home for longer, and there was always talk of outing programs, transportation for appointments and shopping, group exercise, visits from podiatrists, and help with things like two-person transfers, insulin shots, or incontinence care.
