    Excellent rehab with compassionate staff

I moved my mother here for post-op rehab and I'm very pleased - the staff are consistently friendly, caring and professional. The physical, occupational and aquatic therapy teams (the rehab pool with built-in treadmill and superb gym) drove fast, measurable progress in a bright, up-to-date, nationally recognized facility with strong medical oversight and many family-friendly touches. Comfortable, clean, and attentive care overall - excellent rehab and compassionate staff, with only minor areas that could be even better.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of Westview Health Care Center present a mixed but distinct pattern: many families and patients praise the facility for strong rehabilitative services and an otherwise comfortable, well-equipped environment, while other accounts raise operational concerns around staffing, communication, and certain aspects of basic care.

Care and therapy: The facility receives consistent positive feedback for its therapeutic offerings. Reviewers highlighted individualized, one-on-one therapy, a well-equipped gym, and an aquatic rehabilitation pool (notably with a built-in treadmill). Physical and occupational therapists, including staff identified by name in some reviews, are frequently described as knowledgeable and effective; several reviewers credited therapy teams with accelerated recoveries and good pain management. At the same time, there are recurring complaints about inconsistent therapy availability (for example, limited or delayed OT services and occasional lack of mobility-assistance such as walker support), which suggests variability in therapy scheduling or staffing that prospective patients should clarify in advance.

Staff and interpersonal care: Many accounts describe compassionate, long-tenured nursing and support staff who create a welcoming, family-oriented atmosphere. Management responsiveness and proactive family communication were praised in several reviews. Conversely, there are clear patterns of concern about staff conduct and bedside manner in other reviews: some families reported curt or unsympathetic interactions, delayed responses to requests, and instances where staff tone or behavior did not meet their expectations. These comments, together with reports of staffing shortages, indicate variability in staff performance and availability across shifts.

Dining and activities: Activity programming is cited positively—residents enjoy a range of activities, from group events to themed evenings, and reviewers noted that activity staff help create a pleasant residential feel. Nutrition is described as generally adequate and sometimes nutritious, but there are reports of inconsistent handling of dietary accommodations and food sensitivities. Prospective families may wish to confirm dietary-accommodation procedures for special needs.

Facilities and cleanliness: The physical plant and clinical equipment receive strong marks: reviewers describe modern, up-to-date facilities, brightened interior lighting, large rooms, and a generally clean, professional environment. The rehab gym and aquatic offerings are repeatedly called out as facility strengths. That said, a number of reviews mention variability in room-level cleanliness and occasional sanitation concerns; cleanliness appears to be uneven across units rather than uniformly problematic.

Management, administration, and transitions of care: Management responsiveness is a positive in some reports, but several reviews raise operational concerns: inconsistent family updates, difficulty obtaining timely callbacks, unclear communication about insurance and discharge planning, and delays coordinating with outside providers. These issues have operational consequences for transitions of care—reviewers described stress around discharge timing and insurance communication. The facility’s payer policies also include limitations (for example, non-acceptance of certain payers), which should be verified during planning.

Notable patterns and guidance: Overall, Westview demonstrates clear strengths in rehabilitation, therapy equipment, and a welcoming environment supported by dedicated staff. However, the consistency of that experience appears to vary by unit, shift, and individual staff members. Recurring operational themes include staffing shortages, uneven family communication, and variability in therapy and basic-care responsiveness (including incontinence-care and call-button response). Prospective residents and families should verify therapy schedules and availability (including occupational therapy), ask about staffing levels for anticipated care needs, confirm payer acceptance, and discuss specific dietary and incontinence-care protocols before admission to align expectations with likely experience.

    About Westview Health Care Center

Westview Health Care Center in Dayville, Connecticut, has stood behind tall white pines since 1954 and offers skilled nursing care along with both short-term and long-term rehabilitation for up to 103 residents each day, including a separate 18-bed Subacute Rehabilitation Unit, and the place is known for its elegant but comfortable design, formal dining room with a baby grand piano, private and semi-private rooms, and a courtyard with gardens that people enjoy sitting in, and while the grounds and common areas are tidy and quiet, there's also plenty of therapy, recreation, and social activities for those who want them. The center is nonprofit and brings together over 76 staff, including more than twenty physicians, a Nurse Practitioner on site, and therapists who offer physical, occupational, massage, aquatic, and speech therapy, both as outpatients and inpatients, seven days a week, with services supporting everything from post-surgery recovery to adolescent and overuse injury programs, and even specialized care for dementia and hospice, which makes it possible to find help for many different needs all under one roof. You'll find the outpatient therapy and Aquatic Center open by appointment throughout the week, while the Sports Medicine Department handles more active injuries with modern equipment, and there's a focus on workers' compensation with ergonomic training and injury prevention, so businesses in the area lean on Westview for occupational health services, assessments, and quick evaluations.

The staff practices comprehensive programs meant to improve patient safety and reduce injuries among both residents and employees, but it's worth noting the facility's recent inspection history, which includes 29 noted deficiencies, two infection-related deficiencies, a deficiency for not maintaining proper infection control, another for not following standards in nutrition and food sources, and a serious citation related to the quality of care for residents with mental or psychosocial needs, rated at an immediate jeopardy level, and these are important things for families to review, as they speak to areas where the facility must continue making improvements. The nurse staffing level is just below the state average, at 3.70 nurse hours per resident per day, and the nurse turnover rate is higher than typical, coming in at 41.3% compared to the 38.9% state average, which can sometimes affect consistency in care, although the facility does have a high overall staff-to-resident ratio. Residents have the option of formal dining with diverse menus, and in addition to the therapy and wellness programs, there's pet therapy, social opportunities, and tastefully furnished gathering spaces, so people can enjoy plenty of relaxed time or choose to stay busy and engaged as they like.

The center keeps a reputation for high-quality rehabilitation, holding a "Five Star" designation and repeated state and national recognition as a top rehabilitation provider for many years, with specialized programs for musculoskeletal disorders, foot and ankle care, overuse injuries, speech and swallowing rehabilitation, and same-day outpatient appointments when needed, all supported by a team that includes administrative specialists like Christine Zadora and many experienced caregivers. Westview's mission focuses on helping people reach their best physical and mental potential, and while it certainly delivers a broad range of therapies and amenities, like a scenic courtyard and rooms that feel more like home and less like a hospital, it's clear the facility still faces challenges around infection controls, food safety, and mental health support, as regulators have noted. The location is convenient to Worcester, Hartford, and Providence, making it easy for families to visit, and the grounds give a touch of peace and privacy that many find appealing during a stay that could be either brief or long.
