    Caring professional staff aided recovery

I spent time in rehab here and was very pleased - nurses, CNAs, therapists and admin were professional, kind and proactive, helping me regain mobility while keeping me comfortable and well fed. Staff went above and beyond, made me feel like family, and I'd recommend this facility for recovery-focused care, with only minor room for improvement.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews for The Elmhurst HealthCare show a polarized pattern: many families and patients describe high-quality, rehab-focused care led by skilled therapists and compassionate nursing staff, while others describe operational and reliability problems that materially affected their experience. Strengths most consistently noted include strong physical and occupational therapy, social-work involvement, attentive CNAs, and a rehabilitation environment that some residents found home-like and effective for post-surgical or post-hospital recovery.

Clinical-care quality is uneven across reports. Positive accounts emphasize measurable therapy gains, individualized care plans, and successful mobility outcomes. Conversely, several reviewers raised concerns about medication-management processes (including discharge medication coordination), gaps in wound and complex-care training, and delays in administering medications or insulin at transitions of care. Families should verify medication reconciliation and discharge prescriptions prior to leaving the facility.

Staff behavior and responsiveness are a major source of variability. Many reviewers praised individual nurses, CNAs, therapists, and social workers as compassionate and professional; others reported inattentive or abrupt communication, sarcastic tone, and long waits for assistance. Call-bell delays, inconsistent checks, and instances of staff distraction by personal devices were cited as care-quality issues. Staffing shortages and variability between shifts were frequently linked to these responsiveness problems.

Dining and activities receive mixed feedback. Several reviewers appreciated meal options, accommodating staff, and engaging recreation programming; however, others reported inconsistent implementation of dietary restrictions and a perceived one-size-fits-all approach to meals. Recreation staff are described as energetic by some and distant by others โ€” families should inquire about individualized activity plans during a tour.

Facilities and housekeeping show a similar split. Positive comments note clean, comfortable rooms and helpful maintenance staff, while critical comments point to sanitation concerns (including odor concerns and inconsistent linen/room cleaning), cosmetic maintenance issues, and occasional visitor-area problems. Privacy and monitoring-policy concerns โ€” for example, questions about cameras or surveillance in patient-accessible areas โ€” were raised and warrant direct discussion with administrators.

Management and operations are another recurrent theme. Several reviews indicate effective, organized case management and helpful front-desk staff; others describe poor discharge planning, failed transportation coordination, delays or miscommunication about appointments and transfers, and concerns about administrative transparency. Language-access limitations (notably a lack of Spanish-speaking staff) and communication breakdowns with families were specifically identified as areas for improvement.

Patterns that emerge across reviews suggest the facility can deliver excellent, rehabilitation-centered outcomes when staffing, communication, and operational processes align. At the same time, variability in staffing levels, housekeeping consistency, medication/discharge coordination, and front-line responsiveness create risk points that families should proactively assess. Prospective residents and their families are advised to ask targeted questions during tours about staffing ratios, discharge and medication reconciliation procedures, language access, privacy/monitoring policies, and how dietary and activity preferences are accommodated to better predict the likely experience for their particular needs.

Elmhurst Healthcare maintains its operations and quality of care through ongoing evaluation and enhancement of its programs and services. Residents are kept informed about their health status and care options, with efforts made to honor their rights, dignity, and self-determination. On-site processes are in place to support the transition of new residents, beginning with immediate needs assessments and care planning upon admission.
