    Compassionate staff, excellent food, engaged

I moved my mom here and have been very pleased - the staff are compassionate, professional, and formed a genuine personal bond while setting up her care plan quickly with weekly doctor visits. The campus is beautiful and clean, the food is excellent, and there are plenty of activities that have made her happier, more engaged, and more at peace. Move-in was smooth, staff are responsive and attentive, and we feel well cared for and confident in her care.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviews present a mixed but distinctly polarized picture. Many families and residents praise the community for its bright, hotel-like common areas, on-site amenities, active social calendar, and staff members who demonstrate patience and warmth. At the same time, a consistent pattern of operational weaknesses — particularly around staffing, clinical consistency, housekeeping, and management follow-through — creates variability in the resident experience.

Care and clinical oversight: Clinical care experiences range from highly competent, attentive nursing and effective rehabilitation to concerning lapses in clinical follow-up. Numerous accounts describe positive therapy outcomes, weekly medical rounds, and diligent CNAs who contribute to resident improvement and comfort. Counterbalancing those are reports of inconsistent medication administration, delayed or missing clinical assessments (for example, delayed diagnostic follow-up after acute symptoms), and case examples of emergency transfers. There are also specific, serious concerns described by families, including concerns following a resident's hospitalization and subsequent death and concerns about infection-control adherence during COVID-19; these raise questions about clinical-monitoring and escalation protocols.

Staff and conduct: Many reviewers describe staff as compassionate, patient, and family-oriented, and direct-care aides receive frequent praise. However, staff shortages, turnover, and uneven training emerge as recurring operational issues that affect responsiveness and continuity of care. Several reviews note curt or poorly timed interactions, scheduling and communication breakdowns with nursing, and occasional safety-related incidents. There are also allegations concerning property mishandling and isolated accounts of troubling staff conduct; these underscore the importance of verifying incident-reporting and oversight mechanisms when evaluating the community.

Dining and activities: Dining is often cited as a strength: chef-driven menus, multiple dining venues, and accommodations for dietary restrictions are frequently mentioned. That said, reviewers also describe inconsistent meal quality — issues with temperature, overcooked or over-salted vegetables, and limited fresh greens or fruit at times — and complaints about meals delivered to rooms when service is disrupted. Activities programming is consistently praised for its variety and family-inclusive events (outings, socials, seasonal celebrations, and therapeutic memory-care activities), though staffing shortfalls have sometimes limited residents' ability to participate fully.

Facilities and maintenance: The campus is generally described as bright, secure, and attractively landscaped, with short hallways and amenities that support a village-like feel. Memory care is concentrated on a single floor, which reviewers see as a positive. Conversely, some areas are described as dated or in need of repair (carpeting, closet/wardrobe issues, small room footprints, limited in-room storage, and lack of in-room showers in some units). Housekeeping and laundry service is hit-or-miss by accounts — with instances of inconsistent linen rotation and delayed room cleaning — and there are repeated mentions of slow pest-control or maintenance responses.

Management, admissions, and billing: Admissions and sales staff often receive favorable comments for being helpful and thorough during touring and move-in. Yet management follow-through after move-in, clarity around pricing, and billing practices are frequent sources of frustration. Examples include unexpected charges during hospitalizations or respite stays, pressure during admissions, and unresolved upfront payments. These operational and transparency gaps compound perceptions of uneven overall quality.

Notable patterns and considerations: The dominant theme across reviews is variability: the community can deliver strong social programming, rehabilitation outcomes, and warm one-on-one care, but these strengths appear dependent on staffing stability and managerial follow-through. Prospective residents and families should verify current staffing ratios, medication-administration procedures, infection-control policies, housekeeping and laundry schedules, pest-control contracts, security measures, and billing practices. Observing a mealtime and requesting recent incident and staffing metrics may help assess whether the environment typically reflects the positive experiences highlighted by many reviewers or the operational gaps raised by others.

About The Haven & The Laurels, Carolina Place

The Haven & The Laurels in the Village at Carolina Place sits in a peaceful, private neighborhood in Pineville, NC, where folks 55 and older can find a home-like place with lots of services and different types of care. People can choose independent living, assisted living, memory care for those living with Alzheimer's or other dementias, nursing home care, and continuing care as needs change, so residents stay in one community even if they need more help over time. The campus is part of the larger Village at Carolina Place, and is managed by Five Star Senior Living, a group that tends to focus on providing tailored care with friendly staff on site 24 hours a day, and a relaxed, supportive setting.

The buildings have a traditional feel with white-columned porticos, decorative railings, and covered outdoor spaces. Gardens bloom with colorful crepe myrtle trees, and there are walking paths, a gazebo by the pond, and a dog park for pet lovers. You might see folks in rocking chairs, socializing during lobby happy hour, working in community gardens, or enjoying live music. There's a lake and both outdoor and indoor heated pools, plus a fitness center and exercise classes. Residents can join in activities like movie nights at the in-house theater, group trips to local attractions, library lounge afternoons, darts tournaments, gardening, and religious worship in the on-site chapel.

Residences come in a range of sizes with different floor plans, and you can find living spaces with private rooms, kitchenettes or full kitchens, furnished options, and modern safety features like an emergency response system and elevator. Assisted living and memory care areas are designed for comfort and safety, with secure courtyards, screened porches with wicker chairs and floral touches, and care-focused dining rooms where meals are served restaurant-style, including the MyChoice Dining Program and Five Star Culinary dining. Nutritious, chef-prepared meals are a highlight, with both classic and private dining rooms. Housekeeping, transportation, basic cable, internet, salon services, and concierge help come standard, and pets are welcome throughout the community.

The campus offers speech, physical, and occupational therapy along with rehab and fitness programs, FOX rehabilitation services, medication reminders and administration, support with tasks like bathing and dressing, and routine health care from registered nurses and in-house doctor visits. The secured memory care unit focuses on safety and specialized activities to help residents keep their minds and spirits engaged. The Five Star Experience Program and Five Star Lifestyle bring life enrichment, clubs, social events, pet therapy, and opportunities for volunteering, so people can find something to enjoy no matter their interests. The whole setting is spacious, private, and friendly, with lush landscaping and plenty of sunny and shaded spots for relaxing or spending time with friends and family.
