    Happy with care, warm community

I placed my mother here and am very happy with the choice. Staff treat residents with dignity, are friendly and clearly enjoy their work; the facility is clean, welcoming and well-maintained. Meals are good (thanks to Chef Marian), there are plenty of activities, rehab and on-site services, and my mother feels safe, social and cared for. I would recommend this warm, family-like community.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression Marian Manor presents as a well-established retirement community with many strengths frequently cited by families and residents. Positive themes include a compassionate caregiving culture, consistent caregiver assignments, conscientious housekeeping, attractive common areas and grounds, and a broad menu of activities and on-site services. Several families highlighted the presence of clinical supports such as in-house rehabilitation (OT/PT) and physician access, along with convenient amenities (salon, nail care, chapel) that contribute to a hotel-like, welcoming atmosphere.

Care and staff Care quality is described positively by many reviewers: staff are often characterized as caring, familiar, and knowledgeable, and consistent caregiver assignments were linked to better relationships and continuity. At the same time, there are operational concerns about staff responsiveness, particularly during nights and weekends, and about variability in staff professionalism and communication. Reviewers raised issues that point to gaps in incident-response protocols and family communication; prospective families should ask about overnight monitoring, alarm/pull-cord response procedures, and how incidents are escalated and shared with families.

Dining and nutrition Dining is a mixed area. Numerous reviewers praised varied meal choices, multiple entrées, and appealing breakfast options, while others described inconsistent food quality and meal temperature following staffing or kitchen changes. Some reviewers also observed that the dining-room seating layout can limit social interaction, and there were comments about inconsistent customer service among dining staff. Prospective residents may wish to sample meals during different service times and inquire about menu planning for special diets and heart-healthy options.

Activities and community life Programming is frequently described as robust and engaging. Reviewers mentioned a wide range of activities—therapeutic and social—including holiday programs, resident-led exercise and prayer, volunteer projects, intergenerational visits, arts classes, outings, and regular newsletters and family events. This strong activity calendar appears to support an active social life and positive resident morale.

Facilities, cleanliness, and safety Many reviewers praised the facility’s cleanliness and well-maintained appearance, attractive common areas, and pleasant outdoor spaces. However, there are recurring operational concerns about sanitation and odor in some common areas and restrooms, as well as pest-control concerns. Physical plant aspects are also noted as aging in places and some private rooms were described as small; prospective families should inspect specific room sizes and ask about maintenance and pest-control protocols.

Management, policies, and notable patterns Financial and administrative themes include concerns about high and potentially escalating fees, pricing tied to level-of-care, and limited availability with a long waiting list. Reviewers also raised issues suggesting gaps in staff screening, training, and behavior-management practices; for example, questions about restraint and de-escalation approaches and staff background checks. Given these patterns, it is advisable to ask management for written policies on staffing ratios (including weekend and overnight coverage), staff training and screening, restraint/behavior-management protocols, incident reporting and family communication procedures, infection- and pest-control plans, and a clear explanation of the fee structure and potential future subsidy changes.

Bottom line Marian Manor offers many attributes families seek in a retirement community: engaged programming, clinical supports, attractive shared spaces, and a generally caring staff culture. At the same time, there are consistent operational themes—staffing variability (especially nights/weekends), dining inconsistencies, sanitation and pest-control concerns, and administrative issues around placement and pricing—that warrant direct inquiry during a tour. Prospective residents and families should prioritize on-site observation across multiple days and times and request specific policy documents to assess how well the facility’s practices align with their care and lifestyle expectations.

    About Marian Manor Retirement Community

Marian Manor Retirement Community in Virginia Beach, VA, has been a not-for-profit, nondenominational community since 1989, offering independent living, assisted living, adult day care, memory care, and home health services, and the community serves residents mostly aged 55 and older in private studio apartments or two-room suites with cozy seating areas and four-poster beds, furnished kitchenettes, walk-in closets, and designated private bathrooms, and the rooms are pet-friendly, too, which is nice if someone has a companion animal. Residents get three restaurant-style meals a day with choices for special diets like gluten-free, low sodium, vegetarian, and pureed meals, plus there's an all-inclusive utilities package, so you don't have to worry about separate bills, and a backup generator is on site for emergencies. The staff includes registered and licensed nurses on duty 24 hours a day, and there's a full emergency response system in every unit, so if something happens, help's always close by, and the medical services cover medication management, high acuity care, diabetic care, incontinence care, and hospice support, with speech, physical, and occupational therapy available in-house for both short-term and ongoing rehab needs, and even pet and personal care therapy.

Everyone gets the comfort of housekeeping and laundry services, and the building is fully handicap and wheelchair accessible, with wide, ground-floor units, cable TV, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, garden views, and shower access, and residents can keep busy or relax on the lovely front porch, walk the outdoor paths, spend time by the koi pond or gazebo, or take part in gardening in the outdoor spaces, and there's a library, craft and game rooms, private dining rooms for social meals, a spa on-site, and a chapel facing lakeside sunsets, plus an on-site Pastoral Counselor for spiritual needs, along with faith-based activities like Bible study and prayer groups. Security is important, so there's 24-hour controlled entry, regular patrols, and staff monitoring, which helps everyone feel safe and calm, especially at night; transportation is also provided for medical appointments, social outings, day trips, shopping, and local events, and resident parking's available, too.

The community calendar is full of activities-happy hours, ballroom dance classes, outdoor picnics, service projects, holiday celebrations, and service opportunities for residents who like to help out and give back-but of course, people can enjoy quieter moments if they like, with tranquil walking paths and a peaceful indoor chapel. The dining room is newly renovated with vaulted ceilings and nice views, and there are spaces for gatherings during special celebrations like spring festivals or cozy holiday meals.

Amenities cover almost everything someone might need, whether it's physical support through four levels of assisted living care, medication help, emotional and mental support, or just an active lifestyle and friendship; the compassionate staff works closely with each resident, encouraging independence, trust, and personal satisfaction while respecting privacy and individuality. The building is a mid-rise, close to local shopping, dining, art, and entertainment, as well as Sentara Leigh Hospital, and guests can schedule a tour or pick up a brochure to learn more about the lifestyle and comfort offered here. Marian Manor is open to people of all faiths and backgrounds, sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Richmond but not limited to any one group; it's been recognized for care in Hampton Roads and is known for focusing on resident health, happiness, and safety. Families in the area have trusted the community for years, knowing their loved ones will have access to good care with plenty of ways to stay active, make friends, and live with dignity.
